Oct 13, 2017 West Peoria Pit Bull Attacked Small Dog, 2 People

West Peoria - Two men saw a pit bull attacking a dachshund that was being walked on a leash by a 70 year old woman. The pit bull climbed over a 5 foot gate to get out of its yard and went after the woman who was walking two dachshunds. The woman fell to the ground trying to get the pit bull off her dog. Two neighbors came out to help and both were bitten, one reportedly was bitten badly.

The dachshund had at least 20 puncture wounds, some of them very large. The victim's daughter says that the pit bull had attacked a German shepherd in May of this year. The victim's daughter also reports that the pit bull owner never even asked if she could help the victim.

The owner of the pit bull said that Thursday marked the first time she let the dog outside without a leash. The owner was inside when she heard commotion, then came outside to retrieve the dog, according to the report. Then she called police.

Deputies said the smaller dog had a “U-shaped cut” on its right side. It was taken to a vet by its owner, but the severity of its injury was not specified by police.

Peoria County Animal Protection Services took the pit bull for quarantine. Further information was not immediately available about the dog’s fate.

That's the ignorance of most people. That's exactly what I was talking about earlier most people have no common sense whatsoever in this world. If you don't use the common sense that you were born with you don't need to be here. And that goes for all these ignorant f****** cops out there too. They're so quick to pull their gun on a pit bull or anything that looks like a pitbull. We just had two of them shot down on Humboldt Street in the south side of Peoria Illinois period saw the video no apparent reason whatsoever. There were three black kids that were teasing those dogs one had to run up on a car the other one standing out on the sidewalk with a board in his hand and the other little tired was running around the other side of the car. The cop pulls up with his lights blazing the dogs are barking at those niggars and the cop is hastily pulling out his gun and shot and killed both of them. Why? You got me! I am furious that people are this damn stupid ass ignorant. Ignorance is bliss I guess in some people's eyes but in my eyes it's a waste of space.

Aug 06, 2014 Threatening Pit Bull Dies After Being Tased

Peoria - Police attempted to use non-lethal means to subdue a threatening dog Tuesday but ended up killing the animal anyway, according to a report.
Officers were called about 6 p.m. to the 1500 block of South Livingston Street for two pit bulls running loose and attacking people.
When the first officer arrived on scene, one dog growled, showed its teeth and lunged for the squad car before the officer exited the vehicle, according to a report.

Jun 19, 2014 Peoria Pit Bull Bites One Man and Menaces Another Before Being Shot by Police

South Peoria - Loose pit bulls caused a disruption on the 2100 block of West Howett st. on Wednesday. One man drove away from his home rather than confront the pit bulls, another man was bitten and chased onto a car and a third man was chased on his bicycle. Police were forced to shoot one of the pit bulls when the pit bull menaced them. Police had to maintain the area, telling children they must go inside to safety until animal "services" could get there to contain the animals.

A South Peoria man was driving in the 2100 block of West Howett Street shortly before 4:30 p.m. Wednesday when he saw two pit bulls in his front yard, according to a report on the incident.

The man decided to drive around the block one more time to wait for the dogs to leave. When the witness came back to his house, the larger of the two pit bulls had bitten a man in the hand, drawing blood. The man who had been attacked climbed on top of a car to escape the dog’s charges, and the two pit bulls began to chase another man on his bike.

Interestingly, Peoria has no animal control. They have Peoria County Animal Protection Services that is a collaboration between the Humane Society and Peoria county Veterinary Medical Assoc. with no mission statement to protect the public. They state they will "enforce state, county and city animal control and welfare laws, consistent with [each] city's level of contractual service." Giving animal control duties to humane societies is the equivalent of turning policing duties over to social services organizations. Both animal cops and humane services are important and should work together, but they are not the same and it is dangerous to forget this. We need animal control with a stated purpose to protect people and animals from dangerous animals and irresponsible owners.

Under "How To Report Animal Bites" there is this interesting paragraph:

"Even if an attack can be explained (the pet was scared, the child stepped on the pet's tail, the pet is afraid of people in uniform), it can rarely be excused. If your pet shows serious aggression that professional help cannot cure, do not give the pet to someone else - least of all, someone who wants a "mean" pet. Pets obtained for purposes that make aggression a "desirable" trait almost invariably lead miserable lives. They are also likely to attack someone else in the future. Giving your pet away will only perpetuate the problem. And, you could be liable if your pet bit another person after you've given it away. If you feel you must give up your pet, call Peoria County Animal Protection Services."

Animal Control is calling the dog a Shar Pei, a dangerous fighting breed from China, but there are no photos available of it. It should be noted that pit bull advocates often have trouble distinguishing a pit bull and a shar pei mix. See the Shar Pei meme to learn about this strange phenomenon.

Peoria - A 10 year old girl was mauled by a loose pit bull while she was playing outside. Her rescuers, Terry Burnside Sr and Terry Burnside Jr, beat the dog off the girl with a hammer and their fists to stop what they called a shocking attack.

The girl was taken to the hospital with deep gashes and multiple injuries to her head, back and arms.

The pit bull owner, RITA S. WASHINGTON, took the pit bull and hid it in her house without attempting to aid the child in any way. When police came for the pit bull WASHINGTON attempted to give them a different dog. Police finally were able to get the pit bull and placed WASHINGTON "into custody to the cheers of a gathered crowd."

RITA WASHINGTON was arrested on a warrant for an outstanding traffic ticket and for obstructing police. She was given two piddly tickets for failure to inoculate or register the mauler and for allowing the mauler to run at large and create a nuisance.

This is the second mauling of a child by a bull breed dog reported in the news since Peoria was reported to be looking at how to limit dog attacks.

Here's a hint: regulate or ban bull breeds. Peoria is a home rule city and under home rule, Peoria can implement BSL despite the statewide ban on BSL. And the Illinois home rule system "gives the broadest and most liberal authority to cities and counties of any state in the nation" according to NIU's Center for Governmental Studies.

Peoria - An American bulldog mauled a 9 year old boy in a neighbor's yard. The boy was hospitalized.

Councilwoman Beth Akeson wants to craft legislation to prevent such attacks.

“It’s one of those issues where a dog isn’t declared dangerous until someone is hurt,” she said. “I’d like to see an ordinance written so people have a very clear understanding for how people must care for their dogs and restrain their dogs.”

May 20, 2013 Peoria Discusses ways to limit dog attacks

Peoria - Peoria has created a city task force to consider measures to limit dog attacks.

The police chief testified that pit bulls pose problems for police. Of the 332 reported dog bites reported in Peoria county last year, 102 were due to pit bulls (30%). One third of dogs the shelter receives each year are pit bulls. Pit bulls are the second most licensed dog in the county after labs.

Peoria - A pit bull escapes its yard, charges a 70 year old woman walking her leashed yorkshire terrier and kills it. The 6 pound yorkie, Little Bear, attempted to defend his owner before the pit bull quickly broke his neck.

Please understand how abnormal this is. Most dogs, even if they are inclined to chase little animals, are deterred by the presence of a person standing right there. It was not normal, typical, or usual that pet dogs were killed while out on a walk on a leash in a residential neighborhood before pit bulls came on the scene.

The pit bull owner SERGIO MOLINA-GARCIA had allowed the pit to escape several times in the past and one time it had chased an elderly man. It also had bitten a visitor inside the owner's home. And there were reports on the previous aggression and biting.

Know that you must always sign the complaint for a pit bull running loose because you don't know the violent history that pit might have. That is being a good neighbor to the rest of the neighborhood.

And advocate for pit bull regulation. Peoria is a home rule city. Peoria can ban or regulate pit bull ownership and require responsibility. It must be done. The history on this pit bull before it killed a leashed dog with its owner is a perfect illustration of why pit bulls must be regulated to prevent killings like this.

Know that pit bulls are killing many small dogs on walks, in their own yards and even inside their homes across Illinois and the nation. How many of our little pets, our companions, our family must die before we pay attention and regulate pit bulls?

Thank you mrx for the website. I did read the information and feel that I am better educated about pit bulls. A pit bull attacked my nephew when he was 7 years old. He will be turning 18 in April. He has had 3 plastic surgeries to his face. His face looked like a rail road track with all the stitches. His face was so swollen that he was not recognisable. The dog belonged to his grandmother on his dads side. My sister sued her mother in law, my nephew will be getting a well deserved insurance settlement when he turns 18. What was my nephew doing to provoke the pit bull? He was lying on the floor in front of the television coloring. All pit bulls should be shot!

Aug 20, 2011 Pit bull shot, killed after attacking E. Bluff residents

PEORIA — Two East Bluff residents were attacked by a dog early Friday morning that ultimately ended when police shot and killed the animal.

Police and animal control arrived and attempted to apprehend the dog. Police eventually shot and killed the dog. The owner of the dog was issued a citation for allowing his dog to run at large.

WEST PEORIA —Two loose pit bulls attacked a Yorkshire Terrier in its backyard Tuesday afternoon, according to a report by the Peoria County Sheriff's Department. The dog died from bite wounds later in the day at a veterinary clinic.

The owners will not be charged criminally, as no state criminal law applies in the case, she said.

West Peoria – Corky the mutt enjoyed 15 happy-go-lucky years.

But her last few minutes were brutal.

Slowly and painfully, her life was ripped away Monday by a pit bull gnashing at Corky's throat. Corky's owner, Jeremy Kuhn, vainly fought to save his pet, only to watch in horror at the pit bull's relentless attack.

"I'm going to have to live with that the rest of my life," Kuhn says with a slow sadness.

Peoria – Neighbors Bob Buchanan and Kristen Michaud say they live in fear for the same reason: pit bulls.

But they differ in their opinions about them.

"Common sense would say that if I'm gonna mow (the grass), I'm gonna knock next door and say, 'I'll be out here,' " Michaud says.

"I'm so tired of this man telling people I have a vicious dog," she says. "I feel harassed."

Meanwhile, Buchanan can't believe Michaud is allowed to keep the remaining pit bull. He thinks that if you are an irresponsible pet owner, you should not be allowed to keep animals.

Peoria - In truly absurd reporting, Central Illinois Proud uses 36 words and 156 characters to describe a pit bull attack in which the pit bull killed a small poodle and says that some people wonder if the breed should be banned.

CIProud doesn’t say how the attack happened, where it happened, if the dogs were leashed or owned for that matter. The article doesn't say what happened to the pit bull or what authorities said would happen to the pit bull and owner (if there is one). The article says that some people wonder if the breed should be banned, but it doesn’t say who is doing the wondering or quote their thoughts on the subject

Then, CI Proud quotes and names a pit bull owner, seemingly picked at random, who, surprise!, thinks pit bulls are great. Finally, CI Proud quotes the director of Peoria Animal Welfare, who spreads the lie that pit bulls make great pets because “it’s all how you raise them.” CI Proud uses 211 words and 1007 characters to tell their readers that despite the fact that a pit bull killed a poodle, pit bulls make great pets. You have to admit it’s a great strategy. Since pit bulls attack so often, if you use every pit bull attack as a chance to tell people that pit bulls make great pets, they will absolutely be hearing that message A LOT (you know, because pit bulls attack so much).

A recent dog attack in Peoria involving a pit bull against a poodle resulted in the death of the smaller animal.
It's also caused some people to wonder if the pit bull breed should be banned.
While pit bulls have the reputation for being vicious animals, some say the owners, not the dogs, are the problem.
The Armitage family in Peoria has had pit bulls in their home for more than a decade, and they say the dogs get along
great with the girls. Sten-Eric Armitage says, “It's how you raise the animal and it's how you treat the dog that makes the
difference.”
Lauren Malmberg, the director of the Peoria Animal Welfare Shelter (http://www.ci.peoria.il.us/services/depts/paws/)
agrees. She says, “Pit bulls are not by nature aggressive by nature any more than virtually any other dog is.”
Malmberg says pit bulls make up forty percent of the shelter's activity simply because a lot of people in the area happen
to have the breed. And pit bull owners aren't always responsible. She says, “We have a lot of dog-fighting in the area--
most of the time it's pet owners who pit their animals against each other to see who's the toughest dog.”
For those who advocate banning the breed, the problem is two-fold. First of all, it's against state law to do so. And
secondly, animal experts add it's not what kind of dog you have--it's how you care for it.
Armitage says, “I think pit-bulls are fantastic family dogs.”

Jul 17, 1911 Peoria Boy Torn By Vicious Bulldog

Peoria - While visiting at his aunt's home to-day, Raymond Stevens, 4 years old, of Chicago, was torn almost to death by a bull dog. His head and body were lacerated.
The boy is at Proctor hospital. Mrs. Stevens pushed her arm in the dog's mouth and was wounded.

Latter, Chained to a Stake, So Badly Mangled It Will Probably Die

Peoria - A vicious bulldog belonging to william Stege attacked a fine jersey cow, also the property of Stege, yesterday and before he could be torn from his victim had literally torn the unfortunate beast to pieces. When finally the dog was dragged away the cow presented a shocking appearance. The animal's hide was torn into strips, its entrails were protruding in places and all the flesh had been stripped from its legs. The lot in which the cow had been tethered looked like a slaughter house so bathed was it in crimson gore and the cow lay stretched on the ground, a heap of mangled flesh. The cow was tethered in a vacant lot near the Stege house and was peacefully cropping grass when a small mongrel pup chanced along and began barking at the animal. This excited the bulldog which, without warning, suddenly leaped at the cow and began its murderous attack. The dog was shot and the cow will probably die.
