Granite City - "So upset my dog got attacked by a pit bull and they can't do anything about it. I have to take it to court.  He's got five big [gashes] in him."

Granite City is a pit bull hellhole.  Read the related posts to see how a pair of Granite City pit bulls were allowed to kill at least TWELVE other dogs in 2014 and nothing was done about it.  TWELVE innocent dogs!  In 2008 pit bull BSL was considered but never acted upon.

The mother of a minor boy has filed suit against the owner of a pit bull she claims viciously attacked her eight-year-old son.

Brandon Newcombe, a minor, by his mother and next friend Kristy Ashcraft, filed suit Aug. 22 in the Madison County Circuit Court against Anna Thomason.

According to the complaint, Newcombe was on the defendant’s property at 2665 E. 23rd St. in Granite City on April 10 when her pit bull attacked Newcombe without provocation, according to the complaint.

Due to the incident, Newcombe suffered severe and permanent injuries to his arm, shoulder and stomach and experienced great pain and suffering, the suit states. He also endured permanent scarring and disfigurement, the complaint says.

His mother, Kristy Ashcraft, claims she incurred medical costs due to the attack.

In the complaint, the plaintiffs blame Thomason for Newcombe’s injuries, saying she negligently failed to keep the pit bull in the house while he was playing in her yard, failed to secure the pit bull, failed to supervise the dog and allowed the dog to bite Newcombe.

The plaintiffs seek a judgment of more than $200,000, plus costs. They are being represented by attorney Matthew R. Chapman of Becker, Schroader and Chapman in Granite City.

UPDATE: Madison county animal control confirms that the less aggressive of the two pit bulls that have been on a months long killing rampage was put down.    Animal control wants to declare the other pit bull "dangerous" so that it has ample opportunity to kill a few more beloved pets before they euthanize the more aggressive mauler.

Granite City - Two pit bulls that have escaped owners' yard repeatedly attacked and killed up to 11 other pets, have killed again.

This time they leaped a fence to kill a 13 year old black toy poodle named Antoine in his own fenced yard.

The dogs are now impounded and it is not known if authorities will seek to have the dogs declared dangerous.  Despite all the kills these maulers have racked up already, authorities don't believe they've killed enough yet to go ahead with a vicious dog hearing.  Perhaps they're waiting for a child to be killed.

Family of the previous three victim dogs, who are pit bull lovers, have said frequently said that its not the pit bulls' fault, as if laying blame on the dogs is the point at all.  They are content to mouth the platitude that owners should be responsible, and are seemingly oblivious to the fact that if the owners of the dead chihuahua mixes or Antoine, the latest fatality, had been irresponsible and let their dogs run loose, those dogs would have killed nothing.  They are also oblivious to the fact that even responsible owners have an off moment, and it is unacceptable to keep animals that, when they escape, are determined and only want to kill in residential neighborhoods.

Antoine's mourning owners do feel the situation is ridiculous and needs to stop.

May 21, 2014 Granite City Pit Bulls Responsible for 11 Pet Attacks and Deaths

A pair of pit bull mixes have been killing pets since last November and may be responsible for all 11 deaths to pets including the devastating home invasion attack that brutally killed three chihuahua mixes.  The pit bulls jumped over a fence into the enclosed yard and then entered the home through a doggie door to kill three chihuahua mixes.

One Chihuahua mix, Cowboy, had been dragged outside and disemboweled, so a police officer put him out of his misery.  Another dog, Bandit, was killed inside and the third, Sugarbutt, was still alive when police arrived, but mortally wounded.

The brutality of the attack devastated the owner who came home to to a horrific scene, but did not see the attack.  Other neighbors describe the same pit bull mixes as having tried to enter their homes to kill their pets.

Last year, a pit bull killed a sheltie being walked by a mentally disabled man, and these are just the most recent in a string of pit bull problems that go back many years In Granite City.  Nothing has been done and the problem seems to be getting worse.

Granite City - A Granite City pit bull killed a sheltie mix owned and being walked by a man with mental disabilities The pit bull owner has only been issued a ticket for a loose dog.

Police responded to reports that an aggressive dog was attacking people.  The loose pit bull had killed a mentally disabled man's sheltie mix and then attacked the sheltie owner when he picked up his mortally wounded sheltie.  People threw bricks at the pit bull and it momentarily retreated.

When police arrived, the shaken sheltie owner who was injured and covered in blood, was screaming, "He killed my dog."

A patrolman shot the pit bull to protect the sheltie owner when the pit bull circled back aggressively.  The pit bull was suffering after the first shot, so the officer fired again to put the pit bull out of its misery.

Police Chief Rich Miller defended the officers' actions, but expressed remorse that the pit bull was killed.

Chief Miller then attempted to normalize pit bull aggression and dangerousness by saying "Sometimes these things are accidents, the dog gets away" as if when other kinds of dogs get loose they kill small dogs in the presence of the victim's owner and then attack the owner.

Miller also said that the city has one or two dog attacks on people a year.

The pit bull owner was ticketed for a loose dog.  The sheltie owner was taken to the hospital, treated and released.

Five years ago Granite City  enacted a tougher dangerous dog ordinance after a horrible serial pit bull attack on two dogs.  The ordinance mandates a special license for owners of dangerous and vicious dogs which requires the owner to provide proof of insurance, immunizations, veterinary care among other things.  The dangerous dog owner must also provide photographs of the dangerous dog and pay a dangerous dog licence fee.

The city sanitation dept is to inspect the premises to verify adequate containment before the license is granted.  And there are requirements the owner of the dangerous dog must follow.

Granite City leaders want a stricter, but non-breed specific vicious dog ordinance after a pit bull attack.

The council is considering amending the ordinance due to a Jan. 6 incident in which a bit bull attacked a terrier on a chain at a residence in the 2300 block of Hodges and then a miniature Doberman pinscher in the same area.

The pit bull was subdued by a bystander after the terrier's owner repeatedly hit the pit bull with a baseball bat as it attacked the Doberman pinscher.

The Animal Control Department was called to take control of the pit bull.

Apparently, it got loose from a residence on neighboring East 25th Street.

The terrier is recovering after surgery at a local animal hospital. The Doberman was not seriously injured.

According to Granite City authorities, the pit bull is owned by Deborah Newman, who resides outside Granite City.

Newman was cited for animal at large and fined.

At a recent municipal court hearing, the pit bull was declared a vicious animal.
