Southern Illinois - Updates on a few pit bull attacks.

Dustin Keith of Carterville reported that his daughter was attacked by a pit bull in Anna in Union county, IL.

Keith wants to get the word out that owners are not adhering to leash and restraint laws and are creating a danger for the public.

In Williamson county, Tonya Holland is finally going to pre-trial for the nearly fatal attack her pit bulls inflicted on a 5 year old Winston Bankston in Bush, IL.

UPDATE - Ed Barwick wants to carry a firearm. He went before the county commissioners explaining to them that he was virtually defenseless and had it not been for the help of neighbors, he could have been killed.

Williamson co - Animal Control Officer Ed Barwick was seriously mauled by a pit bull while responding to a call about that pit bull.

Barwick credits a neighbor who shot the attacking pit bull with saving his life. The pit bull did not die and ran away. Yet another neighbor shot the pit bull, killing it. It took 8 shots to put the dog down.

Barwick has more that 20 stitches on his arm, leg and face.

The owner, LEE ANN MURRAY of Johnston City, had refused to give up the dog initially, which led to the attack. She has vowed to get another dog.

MURRAY, who has arrests for drugs including meth, was only ticketed for a dog running at large for mauling a county official. She was later arrested on an unrelated charge.

Williamson county has a long history of serious problems with pit bulls. In 2007, Johnston City attempted to remedy the attacks residents had been suffering by pit bulls by instituting a pit bull ban. Ledy Vankavage, then of the ASPCA, informed the city they were prohibited from banning pit bulls by state law - A law that Vankavage herself had crafted. In 2009, less than two years later, 3 year old Gabrial Mandrell-Sauerhage was killed by family pit bulls in the same tiny town of Johnston City.

The next year, in 2010, another Williamson county boy, Winston Bankston, was seriously mauled by pit bulls mixes. He was air lifted to a trauma care hospital and was put in a medically induced coma.

Marion - A pit bull escaped its home, invaded a neighbor's back yard and mauled a small dog named Little D so severely that police officer had to use his weapon to put Little D out of his misery.

Family members said the little dog was was so badly mauled that it was unrecognizable as a dog.

The pit bull has been loose before and the neighborhood is on edge because animal control may return the pit bull to the irresponsible owner after a 10 day quarantine.

Bush – Winston Bankston 5-year-old boy is clinging to life after being attacked by pit bull dogs while he played in the city park.

"I spoke with a member of the family this morning. And Winston is in ICU at Cardinal Glennon, he is in a medical induced coma and on a ventilator," Chief Harvel said.

Johnston City is a small town of 3,557 people (2010 census) in southern Illinois. In September 2007, the Johnston City Council passed a pit bull ban. The council was responding to some recent pit bull attacks and were confident the ban would successfully protect the citizens of Johnston City from continued pit bull attacks.

Jim Mills, who had his dog torn out of his hands and killed by a pit bull and had a finger torn off fighting off the pit bull in the same attack, supported the ban.

The fire chief supported the ban. "I think it's a great thing, the ordinance it protects us, it protects everyone else who has to go into a house or yard. We need the protection because we don't know what we're walking into when we get to most emergency calls," he said.

A non-resident pit bull advocate who opposed the ban said that it was unfair to pit bulls.

Nine days after the ban was announced Ledy VanKavage issued a statement that the Johnston City's ordinance was illegal. VanKavage herself crafted the ban on breed bans that took vital decision making powers out of the hands of the local elected government.

Less than two years later, 3 year old Gabrial Mandrell-Sauerhage was killed by pit bulls in same small town of Johnston City.

While it can't be known if Gabrial's death would have been prevented by a pit bull ban, it is clear that the town's elected leaders did correctly identify pit bulls as the specific threat to their community and that a pit bull ban only could have improved Gabrial's chances of survival.

The perceived "unfairness" to pit bulls pales in the face of a child's death.

This tragic series of events demonstrates with crystalline clarity that localities must be free to address local safety issues to protect their citizens. The statewide ban on BSL obviously doesn't protect children. It doesn't even protect pit bulls. It ONLY protects pit bull owners and breeders.

Johnston City - Three dogs apparently involved in the death of a 3-year-old Johnston City boy were euthanized at 9 a.m. Tuesday, according to Williamson County Sheriff Tom Cundiff.

Williamson County Coroner Mike "Junior" Burke previously said the child sustained a number of dog bites, but one specific bite caused him to hemorrhage.

The couple had three dogs, two pit bull mixes and a collie mix.

The release went on to state that Gabrial suffered at least one bite that would have made "yelling impossible."

Vicious dogs Lead to Stronger Laws

Carbondale – There have been numerous pit bulls attacks across Southern Illinois and many subsequent attempts by municipalities to strengthen laws governing vicious dogs.

Despite many communities across the state recognizing that they have a specific problem with pit bulls committing dangerous and vicious acts, these communities are hamstrung by Ryan's Law's ban on Breed Specific Legislation.

Herrin, West Frankfort, Murphysboro, Johnston City, Cutler, Saline county, and Zeigler have all suffered from pit bull problems. Don't forget the tragic results in Johnston City after their pit bull ban was called out as illegal by the ASPCA.

Johnston City – Jim Mills was walking little 'Skippy' around their neighborhood. They were just a block from home when Mills and Skippy were attacked by a neighbor's pit bull.

"He didn't look too friendly. So I reached down and picked Skippy up in my arms. And that dog jumped into the air and took Skippy and me to the ground. It had my hands and my dog in it's mouth. And I don't know how I got free, but that dog proceeded to kill my dog right there," said Jim Mills of Johnston City.
