2017 Quincy Pit Bull Kills Family Member in February

Quincy - On February 27th of this year 21 year-old Jamie Owsley was killed by a pit bull in his own home.  The local and state news outlets reported virtually nothing on the fatal attack and did no follow-ups on the attack at all.  They failed to confirm that the cause of death was the dog attack, calling it "an apparent dog attack."  The local news outlets failed to report that the killer dog was a family pit bull that the victim routinely slept with in his bed.  Local outlets also failed to report that the killer pit bull had at least 3 reported bites, including one attack on a child and one that required stitches.

The only reason we know what happened is because DogsBite.org filed a Freedom of Information request, received a full police report on the attack, and reported on Jamie Owsley's death.  No local or state news outlet bothered to do the bare minimum of reporting on the attack even after the killer pit bull's owner, KERRY D. TALBURT II,  was subsequently arrested and charged with six felonies which included aggravated battery because he allegedly sicced another of his pit bulls on another man in July.

Jamie Owsley, victim; Hercules the Killer; Kerry Talburt II, pit bull owner
The police report states that Jamie Owsley died as a result of "penetrating and crushing injuries to the neck, due to dog attack."  The day previous to the attack Owsley reportedly had suffered a seizure.  The attack occurred at 3:26am, Sunday February 26.  Owsley's roommate, relative, and the owner of Hercules, the killer pit bull, KERRY TALBURT II, woke up when he heard the attack, got Hercules the pit bull off Owsley and called his grandfather who came and took Jamie and Kerry to the hospital where Jamie was pronounced dead.

The coroner's report states that there were no defensive injuries suggesting that Owsley was alive but incapacitated at the time of the attack, suggesting that he may have been seizing at the time.  Owsley regularly slept with Hercules and was well known to the pit bull. Hercules the killer pit bull latched onto Jamie's neck and crushed his "larynx and hyoid bone."

According to police, Talburt said he owned three pit bulls.  He said that Hercules, a 4-year-old male pit bull did not get along with the other two pit bulls, Java (2 yrs) and Hoss (1.5 yrs) so when Hercules was out of his cage, the other two had to be caged.  The typical sleeping arrangement was for the other two pit bulls to sleep in their cages in the bedroom with Talburt while Hercules slept in the living room on a bed with Owsley.

Jul 10, 2017 Quincy Pit Bull Used as a Weapon By Owner

Quincy - Charges have been filed against a Quincy man who was arrested Saturday after he allegedly let his pit bull bite another man.

Kerry D. Talburt II, 21, was charged Monday in Adams County Circuit Court with home invasion, aggravated battery, reckless conduct, criminal trespass of a residence and two counts of obstructing justice.
Charging documents say Talburt struck the other man by putting his thumb in one of his eyes and allowed the pit bull to bite him. They also allege he provided false information to police.

The Quincy Police Department said officers were called to 1005 Jersey on a report of a 30-year-old who was bitten by a dog in the face. Police said Talburt got into an altercation with his downstairs neighbor and his dog got loose and bit the man in the face.

The man who was bitten was taken to Blessing Hospital for treatment. The dog was taken to the city's animal shelter for quarantine.

Judge Amy Lannerd advised Talburt that he faces six to 30 years in prison if he is convicted of home invasion, a Class X felony. He also faces the possibility of consecutive sentences if convicted of the other charges.

Talburt will return to court July 24.

He is being held in the Adams County Jail on $20,000 bond.

UPDATE: The dog was identified as a pit bull Australian shepherd mix and was relinquished by the owner and the dog has been euthanized.
Quincy-"The dog, when I was riding my scooter, it got out, and dragged me, off my scooter, and it started biting me," Blake said.

Billy Phelps and his son Collin happened to be driving past when the attack was happening, and managed to get the dog away from Blake.

"It was just an instinct thing," Billy said. "I didn't even think about what would happen if the dog would have turned on us or anything. Just seeing that little boy laying on the ground, screaming and crying, it was just an instant reaction, just pull over, stop and do something."

"I was happy when he got the dog off me because I didn't want to get bit no more," Blake recalled.

Blake's mom Megan is thankful both Phelps and his son arrived when they did.

"I couldn't imagine if it had been any worse," Megan said. "I don't think a mother should ever have to witness her son, any of her kids in that much fear, I'll never forget it, I'll never forget his face."

UPDATE:  A Quincy family wants to prevent what happened to them from happening to someone else.
A Sunday afternoon turned out to be anything but lazy for one 4-year-old boy and his family.
April Walker was taking a friend home at 5th and Sycamore in Quincy.
Her 4-year-old son, Jacob, hopped out of her van when a pit bull came around a house and attacked him out of the blue.
Four-year-old Jacob Walker has 16 to 17 stitches in his face from Sunday's dog attack.
"He just started growling. I was arm-length away from Jacob. No sooner I look back at Jacob, the dog came running at me. It went right through my legs, had Jacob down on the ground. I was trying to grab Jacob and get him away from the dog. I kicked him. I grabbed Jacob in my arms. I threw him over my shoulder. The dog was still trying to grab at him. At that point when he was still trying to grab at him, the indoor was still open, so I put Jacob in the van. I jumped in right behind him, and I shut the van door. I hopped into the driver's seat, and I took Jacob straight to the ER," April Walker said.
Jacob's mother, April, said the dog was running around loose. She said she's not sure what made the dog go after Jacob and not her.
"There was no one else around. Jacob wasn't doing anything. He had just gotten out of the van. I was coming right behind him," she said. "We weren't doing anything to upset this dog, period."
An outrageously predatory attack
Quincy - A pit bull that attacked a young child Sunday near Fifth and Sycamore has not been found, and authorities are asking local residents to be on the lookout for the dog.

The attack took place at about 4:15 p.m. Sunday. Family members say Jacob Walker, 3, was attacked by the dog as he stood beside his mother, April Walker, and neither did anything to provoke the attack.

The bit bull breed isn't aggressive by nature, but extremely loyal to owner
(original caption - be sure to read the entire story to find that this dog had
a history of loyalty before this extremely tenaciously loyal incident)

QUINCY – The owner of the dog that was killed told me the dog was like his son. And a nearby resident told me kids had played with the dog in the past without any problems. On the other hand, the another neighbor said the dog had broken off its leash before, and in some cases, the mail man could not deliver mail because of the dog.

----------
Richard McCormick's Arms and Legs Lacerated When He Jumped Fence
----------

Quincy - Richard McCormick, aged 16, of 626 Vine street, was attacked by a bulldog yesterday morning and the teeth of the brute so badly lacerated his arm and leg that the services of a physician were needed to staunch the flow of blood and dress the wounds.

It appears that the boy had been sent to the home of Ed Kiggins, 627 Oak street, for the purpose of borrowing a rake, and approaching from the rear, umped over the fence, alighting almost upon the dog, which attacked him at once.  His screams and the fierce snarling of the dog brought assistance, but not before he had been injured.

Dr. Baker, who is attending the boy, says that the wounds are of a most serious nature.

Mr. Kiggins, who owned the dog, has notified the police that he has killed him, though the animal was safely tied in the yard at the time and menacing no one.

Quincy - John Blickhan, of 817 State street was arrested on a state's warrant charging him with cruelty to animals by Humane Officer John Fowley yesterday afternoon for stabbing a dog with a knife.  The incident is alleged to have occurred last Saturday afternoon at Eight and State streets when a dog belonging to Blickhan became involved in a fight with a bulldog belonging to Gerry Hummell, a bartender at Ed Grimmer's saloon on Ohio street.  The blickhan dog apparently was getting the worst of the mix-up and to have him from being eaten up by the ferocious bulldog the owner is alleged to have drawn a knife and stabbed the dog belonging to Hummell three times.  While the injuries inflicted were not fatal at once, they are reported to have been of a serious nature and many cause the death of the bulldog.
Blickhan was released on bond and his case will come up for a hearing in police court this morning.

Aug 01, 1889 Quincy Bull Dog Tackles "Coppers"

Quincy - It is reported that the policemen in the northeast part of the city had a bloody battle with a bulldog on Tuesday night and that the "cops" came out victorious.

When one of them passed Twelfth and Broadway a large and vicious dog jumped out and tried his best to bite the patrolment in the leg. The latter drew his revolver and fired, but missed the dog.

The shot had the effect, however, of preventing a further attack by the dog.

At a later hour the other patrolman, who had been notified of the occurrence, also passed the corner, and the same bulldog made an attack on him. He also drew his revolver and fired. This time the dog did not escape, for in a moment the dog gave a few yelps that could have been heard a mile and ran off.

It is said that his dog has made several attempts to bite persons passing by, and yet he was allowed to run at large without having on a muzzle. The patrolmen ought to be instructed to kill every dog on the streets during the night without a muzzle.
