Chicago - A 10-year-old boy and his mother were both injured after being attacked by a pit bull that escaped from its homein the South Side Roseland neighborhood Tuesday afternoon.

Devon was bitten in the back, with a wound deep enough to require stitches.  Devon’s mother Lasheta Amos opened the door. But at that point the pit bull turned on her. His mom’s arm was ripped apart and required surgery.

Officer Williams says the owner didn’t receive a citation because he turned the dog over to animal care and control.

CBS 2 reached out to animal control about the fate of the dog but didn’t hear back.

Jun 06, 2014 Same Granite City Pit Bulls climb another fence and kill yet another dog

UPDATE: Madison county animal control confirms that the less aggressive of the two pit bulls that have been on a months long killing rampage was put down.    Animal control wants to declare the other pit bull "dangerous" so that it has ample opportunity to kill a few more beloved pets before they euthanize the more aggressive mauler.

Granite City - Two pit bulls that have escaped owners' yard repeatedly attacked and killed up to 11 other pets, have killed again.
RIP Antoine
This time they leaped a fence to kill a 13 year old black toy poodle named Antoine in his own fenced yard.

The dogs are now impounded and it is not known if authorities will seek to have the dogs declared dangerous.  Despite all the kills these maulers have racked up already, authorities don't believe they've killed enough yet to go ahead with a vicious dog hearing.  Perhaps they're waiting for a child to be killed.

Family of the previous three victim dogs, who are pit bull lovers, have said frequently said that its not the pit bulls' fault, as if laying blame on the dogs is the point at all.  They are content to mouth the platitude that owners should be responsible, and are seemingly oblivious to the fact that if the owners of the dead chihuahua mixes or Antoine, the latest fatality, had been irresponsible and let their dogs run loose, those dogs would have killed nothing.  They are also oblivious to the fact that even responsible owners have an off moment, and it is unacceptable to keep animals that, when they escape, are determined and only want to kill in residential neighborhoods.

Antoine's mourning owners do feel the situation is ridiculous and needs to stop.

Aug 31, 2013 Glenwood: yet another Illinois town grappling with pit bull problem

Glenwood - The village has enacted a non-breed specific dangerous dog ordinance in response to a pit bull problem.  Every single Illinois municipal area that has looked at stronger dangerous dog statutes has been prompted to do so because of pit bull attacks.

"[Police Chief Demitrous Cook] said he has noticed a lot of pit bulls and Cane Corsos in the village and that a recent situation occurred in which a pit bull kept jumping a fence to get at a neighbor woman's bull dog, which was injured.

"She was afraid to let her children in the yard," Cook said.

Cook said he was once chased by a pit bull while walking in the village and that Glenwood officers have twice had to shoot pit bulls."

Glenwood joins Peoria, Bloomington, Galesburg, Macomb, Lake county, Cary, Carmi, Skokie, Elgin, Arlington Heights, Waukegan and Wilmington in attempting to address a pit bull problem with non-breed specific dangerous dog laws in the last couple years.

When is Illinois going to realize that the emperor has no clothes and pit bulls are an unwarranted threat to human and pet safety?

Jul 24, 2013 Eldorado pit bull kills puppy and bites two people

Eldorado - A pit bull named Memphis dug under a fence to get to a shih tzu puppy and kill it in front of its 13 year old owner.

The boy and a woman who tried to stop the attack were bitten by the pit bull. The family is traumatized, especially Jonathon, the thirteen year old who witness the horrible killing.

The pit bull's owner wants the dog back.  No one else in the neighborhood wants the pit bull to come back, but town official don't seem to know what the local and state ordinances empower them to do.

Local official believe that the pit bull can be deemed vicious according to local ordinances but not according to state laws. However, there is a provision in the law that specifically permits municipalities to enact more stringent ordinances than the Illinois law provides.

(510 ILCS 5/24) (from Ch. 8, par. 374) Sec. 24.
...nor shall anything in this Act be construed to, in any manner, limit the power of any municipality or other political subdivision to further control and regulate dogs, cats or other animals in such municipality or other political subdivision…

Taking this to the State's attorney is the right thing to do here if officials do not believe they can euthanized the dog under local ordinances.  However, Saline county and counties across Illinois ought to go the route of Lake county Illinois and enact dangerous  dog ordinances that allow local health departments make decisions about whether the dog can be removed and put down for the sake of public safety.

ACC-1201.2.4 Animal-aggressive Dog Dispositions:
In the provision of an animal-aggressive determination notification pursuant to Section ACC-1201.2.3 of this Chapter, the Administrator shall, based upon the evidence of the severity of the attack and/or previous history of other similar attack(s), determine the disposition of the dog, which may include any one or a combination of the following requirements:
A) Enforcement of any or all of the requirements of a dangerous dog determination pursuant to Section ACC-1201.1 of this Chapter;
B)Requiring that the dog be kept in an enclosure approved by the Health Officer, and only allowed out of the enclosure to obtain veterinary care, in case of emergency where the dog’s life is threatened, or to comply with an order of the court;
C)Humanely euthanizing the dog.

Apr 14, 2013 Victims of pit bull ask for tougher rules on vicious dogs

Macomb - An incredible story of animal control incompetence began when a pit bull bit another dog and was surrendered to a shelter.  The dog was adopted out and then got loose and killed a leashed little dog in February 2012, but was allowed to stay with the owner who let it escape again in September 2012 when it attacked two people in their own yard.  The pit bit a man on both his knees and bit the hand of a woman.

The pit bull was surrendered, deemed unadoptable, and banned from the county.  It was taken to a shelter in neighboring Fort Madison, IA where it is reportedly was up for adoption again.

Victims of this pit bull want stronger measures for vicious dogs in McDonough county, increased fines for people who let their dogs run at large, and "greater scrutiny of certain breeds."

In response, animal control wants to do 15 minute temperament tests in the ridiculous belief that a 15 minute test can reliably ascertain if a dog will later show aggression.

Even if the dog fails the aggression test, they want to be able to "relocate" it - so people and pets in other communities can be maimed or killed.

Sep 17, 2012 Pit bull jumps fence to bite 6 month old Yorkie in own yard

File photo of Yorkie puppy
Midlothian - Police responded to a call about a pit bull biting another dog in the 3800 block of 153rd Street. At the scene, officers located the pit bull, known as Princess, in the backyard of a home, but they were unable to catch it. The dog jumped a fence into another yard, where it bit a 6-month-old Yorkie, named Sparkles, on the leg, breaking the skin.

Sparkles was taken to the University Park animal clinic for treatment.

Charles R. Wilke, 37, of the 3800 block of W. 153rd Street, Princess' owner, was cited for allowing the dog to run at-large, and issued a Nov. 5 court date. A Cook County Animal Control Animal Bite Report was completed and faxed to animal control offices.

Jul 21, 2012 Pit bulls at large

In Cary, Illinois, the residents must never forget the horror of the Nick Foley attack and town leaders must be proactive in keeping citizens safe.

To the Editor:
An editorial is in order regarding this ongoing reporting about pit bulls. In March, two pit bull-mastiff mix dogs made an unprovoked attack on my elderly collie on my property. I was helpless, and there was nothing I could do with this beast’s head down in my collie and literally shaking her to death.
-------
Instead of it being a crime scene, law enforcement considered the mauling of my collie and her untimely death nothing more than “dogs at large” and a “petty offense.” This is like someone running my dog and I down with their car on the sidewalk and getting a ticket for an illegal lane change.

Jul 10, 2012 Waukegan woman’s canine companion killed by pit bull

“The unfortunate part is people have really become fascinated with owning pit bulls. (Those) irresponsible owners are causing havoc in the city of Waukegan..." -1st ward Alderman Sam Cunningham, 2012
"We deal with dangerous dogs. Waukegan is known for them. Unfortunately, we are a town for pit bulls." - former AC officer Nicole Garza, 2011
The cold shoulder this vicim-owner is receiving from her alderman and animal control is reprehensible.  Of course, these photos and comments on Waukegan Animal Control's facebook page might explain why the victim is being treated this way.

Waukegan - Leona Wagner, 76, leashed her toy poodle, Precious,  on her front porch and stepped a way for a moment.  When she came back, she found her Precious had been mauled and killed by an unleashed pit bull on her own property.

Animal control refuses to reveal what will happen to the pit bull and Wagner's calls to her alderman, Larry Tenpas, went unanswered.

By Illinois statute, this pit bull can and should be declared dangerous because it clearly has behaved in a manner that a reasonable person would believe is a serious threat by entering the victim's property to attack unprovoked. The dog should be impounded, at owner's expense until the dangerous dog investigation is complete.

As difficult as it might be, the owner should be sued for the little the victim is due, for veterinary costs of the cremation, and what little "property value" this sweet little companion animal, Precious, is worth according to the courts.  I applaud Ms. Wagner for taking this to the media.  Since city officials are too afraid or just callously disregard this problem, every resident of Illinois in a similar circumstance should contact the media, sue the pit bull owners, and keep on animal control to make sure they do their job and designate these pit bulls as dangerous.

May 25, 2012 Carmi citizens want pit bull ban

Carmi residents report being afraid to go outdoors because of an ongoing problem with loose pit bulls.  The mayor reports that the city's hands are tied because Illinois Bans BSL which protects pit bull owners and breeders to the detriment of people and their pets.

Carmi - A neighbor's dog, who was unleashed and unattended, entered the other resident's yard and attacked the dog being brushed. The woman attempted to separate the dogs and suffered multiple injuries, including 16 puncture wounds to her hands. She was treated at an area hospital and her dog remains under the care of a local veterinarian.

The attacking dog was a pit bull breed and Port acknowledged at Monday's meeting there has been a call from neighbors in that area for the council to enact breed-specific prohibitions against pit bulls.

The mayor said such an ordinance has been considered, but the council learned state law prohibits breed-specific prohibitions. One neighbor in the area told The Times she is afraid to be outdoors because of the roaming pit bulls in her area and no longer allows her grandchildren to play outdoors because of the problems.

May 09, 2012 Man stabs dog to make attack stop

Granville – A pit bull was killed after attacking another dog Friday evening in Granville, police said today.
–––––––
It chased another dog across the street, according to Moore.
–––––––
Keith Smoode and a friend attempted to stop the pit bull while it was attacking Smoode’s dog. When they tried to pull the pit bull off the other dog, the collar broke, Moore said.
Even when they tried to hit the pit bull, it wouldn’t stop its attack, Moore said. Finally, they stabbed the pit bull with a knife to end the attack, he said.
The pit bull died and the other dog, which was a German Shepherd mix, was taken to the veterinarian and is expected to live, Moore said.

Mar 31, 2012 Rockford Woman Scared After Mauling by Neighbor's Pit Bull

Rockford - Lisa Jackson was attacked on March 24 by a pit bull.

Jackson said her 3-year-old pug, Daisy, was in the backyard and she was unaware of a freshly dug hole. Suddenly, she found her neighbor’s dog in her yard attempting to confront Daisy.

“Daisy is pregnant,” Jackson said. “I threw myself on her.”

Jackson kept Daisy from harm. She could not do the same for herself.

The pit bull sank its teeth into her left ankle. When she turned to flee, she stepped into a divot and injured her other ankle.

While on the ground, Jackson was mauled. Finally, she was able to grab a stick and forced it into the pit bull’s mouth.

“I wasn’t trying to pry his mouth open,” she said. “I couldn’t.”

Instead, Jackson said she forced the stick into the dog’s throat, hoping it would choke and release its grip.

“I tried to kill it.”

Jackson is scared because after escaping containment and launching an uprovoked, off property attack on a human, the pit bull will be returned to the owner.

Mar 21, 2012 Wheatfield Contemplates Dog Ordinances After Many Pit Bull Attacks

Wheatfield - Dog bites continue to plague the Wheatfield area, specifically pit bull attacks.  The Wheatfield Town Council discussed the issue at Thursday’s meeting in front of a standing-room only crowd.
A patron at the meeting showed the council images of what she alleges her neighbor’s pit bull had done to her dogs as they were in her yard. The pit bull killed one of her dogs, she said. The female patron was concerned as her home is just a few blocks from the school.
“My children are traumatized and I’m traumatized,” she said.  “These situations can quickly turn from animal on animal to animal on human.”
Another patron, Brittany Hunter, spoke up about her husband, Michael Hunter, whom she alleged was bitten on the hip on Feb. 26.   The bit broke skin and pierced Michael Hunter’s jeans, she said; jeans that the young married couple showed.
The dog that bit Michael Hunter was alleged to have been on a leash being walked  by a minor at the time of the dog bite.

Feb 07, 2012 Pit bull mauls Lake co. board member's dog

Waukegan – “Last Thursday between 8:30 and 9 o’clock, I took my three little dogs outside,” Hewitt said Tuesday. “I had them on a leash on my front lawn so they could do their business....”
Before she knew it, Hewitt said, the dog had her 14-pound bischon Maltese, Cindy, in its jaws.
–––––––
... Hewitt said she finds herself struggling to feel comfortable again in the neighborhood where she’s lived for two decades.

“Our lives have changed. I’m afraid to go outside. My husband has to go with me,” she said. “And when we take Cindy out, you can tell she’s scared, too..."

Hopefully this Lake County Board member can effect some changes in her home town of 20 years to make all normal, pet dogs safe from dogs that were bred to attack other dogs - pit bulls.

Jan 24, 2012 Dogs Shot by Elmhurst Police During Attack

Elmhurst – Police responded to the home at 4:57 p.m. after receiving a report that two pit bulls were attacking people inside. When police arrived, one of the pit bulls was still attacking one of the victims, who was covered in blood. An officer shot the dog.
–––––––
One of the victims was taken to Loyola University Medical Center due to the seriousness of the injuries. The second victim was taken to Elmhurst Memorial Hospital.

The initial commenters to Elmhurst Patch story believe that a pit bull attacking its owners is very rare and odd. Others are suggesting that the owners must have been abusing the dog. They must not be aware of Darla Napora's or Joseph Hines' mauling deaths a few months ago. Both were reportedly devoted owners and the dogs were never known to be aggressive. Darla was a supporter and follower of BADRAP.

One pit bull owner on the Elmhurst Patch comments section launched such a vile invective that the reporter was prompted to write a second article called: "'Blame the Victim' Mentality is Unfounded and Hurtful." Edit: the negative comments have subsequently been removed.
