Springfield - Three-year-old Mirra Kay Neal was napping when two pit bulls she had known and played with all her life seriously mauled her in a completely unprovoked attack requiring 7 hours of surgery. The pit bulls inflicted 82 lacerations with over 52 to just her face.

The pit bulls have been put down. They were owned by a long-time friend of Mirra’s father. A facebook page was set up for her where her parents admonished commenters to not put down pit bulls.

At least this attack was reported. That is a big thing in Illinois where the media usually won’t even report pit bull attacks. A fatal attack, probably committed by a pit bull, in Quincy this year has been completely swept under the rug. This is an extreme disservice to the citizens of Illinois.

Springfield - According to a local news blog, a pit bull with history of biting and of killing animals including another pit bull puppy attacked its owner's son. The police were called, but despite the attack history, the pit bull was not taken and the owner was not cited. The pit bull owner's son and daughter fill in details in the comments. This attacking pit bull has attacked other people and killed animals including a 4 month old pit bull puppy named Chloe. News outlets did not cover this serious pit bull attack.

Springfield - A search of an aggravated battery suspect ends with a pit bull shot.

Springfield Police say Doshawn Meyers was arrested after he was hiding in a crawl space at a home in the 17 hundred block of East Jackson. When officers got to the house an occupant said the pit bull would attack, and put the dog in the basement.

However, the dog got out and came at the officer as if it would attack, that's when the officer shot the dog. The dog was taken to the Sangamon County Animal Control Center where it was euthanized because of its injury.

Springfield - A woman was treated at Memorial Medical Center on Tuesday after having been attacked by a pit bull while walking her own dog.

The off property, unprovoked attack left four puncture wounds in her left leg. The dog has not been found.

Springfield - The victim said the two got into a fight and he punched her in the face with a closed fist. She ran outside, but Bocanegra-Flores allegedly grabbed her by the hair and slammed her onto the pavement.

The woman said the pit bull became excited by the attack and started biting her ear and neck.

Police said the dog tore off part of the woman’s ear lobe, which had to be stitched back together.

Springfield – Two pit bulls may have chewed up her body, but they didn’t seize Harmony Dawdy’s spirit, according to her mother, Amber Dawdy.

Four days after the dogs nearly mauled Harmony to death — coming within a millimeter of her femoral artery — Amber Dawdy said Harmony’s vital signs are strong, she’s alert, and she’s even managed to laugh.

“She’s in really good spirits considering everything that’s happened to her and all the pain that she’s going through,” her mother said. “She’s refusing to quit and continues to be as happy as she can be.”

Dawdy said the two pit bulls shredded Harmony’s left leg, left gaping wounds on her right leg, ripped part of her ear off and bit nearly every inch of her young body.

Amber Dawdy, the mother of dog-attack victim Harmony Dawdy, said Wednesday a fund for monetary donations has not set up for her daughter. However, people can send cards of support to:

Non-family visitors are not allowed to visit Harmony, she said.

May 18, 2010 Pit bull mauls 16 year old Springfield Girl

Springfield – A 16-year-old girl was mauled by what was described as a pit bull at a house in the 500 block of West Chenery Street Sunday night.

The leg wound was described as very serious but not life threatening.

Springfield - Sixty year old postal carrier Calvin Shepherd sr. was attacked by two pit bulls. suffered two deep puncture wounds in his right arm that required stitches and a dislocated left shoulder. The dogs also lacerated his inner thigh and put three gashes in his back, which the hospital could not stitch up because of a high risk of infection from dog saliva in the wounds, he said.

U.S. Postal Service spokeswoman Sue Litterly said this was the fifth dog-bite incident involving Springfield postal workers this year. On Friday, that number jumped to seven, as two more postal carriers were bitten by pit bulls, Litterly said.
“Usually we don’t have more than five in a year, and it isn’t even July. I don’t know why it’s so high this year,” she said.

Shepherd said he hopes the dogs will be put down.
“I have seen this before on my route,” he said. “A little girl got her ear bit off by a pit bull. There was also the lady on my route over on Wheeler.

After a swift succession of particularly heinous maulings by pit bulls which left 14 year old Lydia E. Chaplin dead and 10 year olds Nick Foley and Jourdan Lamarre horrifically mauled, several Illinois legislators once again attempted to craft legislation to protect Illinois children from dangerous dogs including an attempt to deem pit bulls and rottweilers dangerous dogs by Rep. Michael Tyron of Crystal Lake, Il which is in McHenry county about about five miles from Cary, IL, where Nick and Jourdan's attack took place.

Springfield - "Rep. Michael Tyron(R) Crystal Lake, said penalizing owners makes sense but so does restricting some breeds that have proven to be inherently dangerous.

Tyron argues it makes no sense to require a court order to deem those breeds dangerous... His bill would consider those dogs dangerous automatically and give local authorities more regulatory power.

Springfield - Allen Warren, the 9-year-old son of Mr. and mrs. Joseph Warren, 851 South Illinois street, who was bitten by a vicious bulldog Tuesday afternoon as he was coming home from school, is somewhat improved in condition and if blood poison does not intervene will soon recover.

Mike Mulosky Pays Fine for Keeping Vicious Animal, But First Slaughters Canine

Springfield - Repenting of his ownership of a mean dog, Mike Mulosky, a miner residing in East Capitol avenue, shot the animal before appearing in Justice Jenkins court yesterday to pay a fine.

Mulosky was arrested Wednesday by Patrolman Holverson, charged with keeping a vicious dog, which is said to have bitten a number of persons residing in the east part of the city. He was notified to appear in Justice Jenkins court yesterday, and announced when in court that he had killed his dog, a valuable bulldog, in order to avoid further trouble. He paid a fine of $7.10 and was released.

Alex Massavige, a miner living near Mulosky, was also arrested by Patrolman Holverson for the same offense. Massavige will be given a hearing Monday.

Vicious Animal Belong to Dan Hayes Causes Trouble on Seventh Street.

Springfield - When Dan Hayes allowed his vicious bulldog to attack a small canine near Seventh and Jefferson streets last night he endangered the safety of several women and babies who were in the vicinity of the encounter. The police escorted Hayes and his bulldog to the city prison and gave both berths behind lock and key.
A number of women and children were occupying the sidewalk near Gehlman's barn and were playing with a small dog belonging to John Guyott when Hayes came along with a vicious fighting dog in leash. After he had passed the crowd Hayes turned his dog loose and allowed it to attack the smaller canine. The big bulldog bit the smaller one in the most cruel and bloodthirsty manner and Hayes made no effort to call his brute off.
In the struggle the two dogs fell among the women and children and several had narrow escapes. Not until the small dog had been nearly killed was Hayes induced to draw off his animal. Hayes has a local reputation as a fighter and owing to his condition it was thought best to put him behind the bars for the night. A warrant charging cruelty to animals will be sworn out against him tomorrow.
