Carpentersville - a mail carrier was taken to the hospital Thursday after a pit bull busted through a screen door and attacked her.
The mail carrier has bites and cuts on her arm and head and she is reported to be recovering, but no news outlets have even reported whether she is still in the hospital or has gone home.
Animal control officials caught the dog and took him to Dundee Animal Hospital for observation, police said.
Police continue to investigate, and have not yet determined whether the dog's owner will be charged.

Apr 22, 2014 LeRoy Pit Bulls Send Two to Hospital
LEROY — Two LeRoy residents were treated for minor dog bites after trying to break up a fight between two pit bulls in their home at about 11 a.m. Sunday.
LeRoy Police Chief Jason Williamson said LeRoy Police and the LeRoy Ambulance Service were called to the residence but the owners had secured the dogs prior to the arrival of the first responders. One adult female and a juvenile were transported to Advocate BroMenn Medical Center, Normal, for treatment. An adult male who also lives at the residence was also bitten, but declined medical treatment. The names of the victims were not released.
The residents reported the two dogs were fighting each other in the basement and bit the residents when they tried to break up the fight.
McLean County Animal Control responded to the scene and took the dogs into custody. The dogs will be evaluated over a seven-day period.

Dec 8, 2013 Chicago Fatal Pit Bull Attack: 2 year old Jah'Niyah White
A 2 year old Chicago girl, Jah'Niyah White was killed by her grandfather's pit bulls, Brownie and General Chico while she was reportedly left unattended in his apartment. The family has said the dogs are pit bulls and calls from reporters at the Chicago Tribune to Chicago Animal Care and Control have not been answered.

She was much loved by her parents and grandparents. Her mother and father, Kashairah Gardner John White of Missouri, are arranging to have her Christmas presents donated to the needy. Britt Williams-Nelson, Jah'Niyah's paternal grandmother, who called Jah'Niyah her Ladybug, said that Jah'Niyah was the smartest 2 year old she'd ever met.
The medical examiner's office determined that Jah'Niyah died from dog bite injuries with contributing factor being neglect and called the death a homicide, however the police department's investigation is so far non-criminal. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is investigating the girl's grandfather for allegations of abuse pertaining to the child's death.

Aug 27, 2013 Bolingbrook police shoot pit bull attacking puggle
Bolingbrook - Police were called to a Bolingbrook home on August, 16 when a newly adopted pit bull attacked and would not leg go of the pit bull owner's other dog, a puggle. According to the owner, after playing with her son and Hogan, the puggle, with no warning or provocation, the young female pit bull attacked Hogan and persisted in the attack for at least 10 minutes before police arrived. Shapiro's 1.5 year old son was a foot away from the attack when it began.
The responding officers asked for permission to shoot the pit bull in order to save Hogan who was by that time blue with severe wounds to his neck and groin. With permission, an officer shot and killed the pit bull. The ghastly and dangerous attack and shooting were not reported in the media.
The pit bull, Khaleesi, had been imported to Illinois from Kentucky in late March by Dawn Teeter Nicosia of The Dog House Humane Group in McHenry, IL according to info from facebook pages and petfinder. Khaleesi lived for several months with a foster named Kristie Hilton in Elgin until Khaleesi was adopted by Shapiro in June. Hilton described Khaleesi as "a gentle soul" who "has not met a dog or person she doesn't like" and displayed several photos of Khaleesi with other pit bulls in her home on her facebook page.
The owner had several photos of the pit bull with her puggle, and the puggle seemed completely at ease with it; He never saw it coming. And now he'll never be the same.

Kaleesi benefits from professional photographs and great write-up on petfinder to get adopted.
Evidently, Khaleesi the Kentucky pit bull loved people and dogs...so she was adopted to a family with a toddler and an adorable puggle.
Then the attack happened.

Long post! Please only read if you want details on Hogan & Khalees's incident. Warning may be graphic and heartbreaking news.
Yesterday was a the most difficult day of my life. I want to share with my friends what happened but I only want to have to explain it once.
Our morning routine was quickly changed. My dog Khalees (or keesy as I called her) went after Hogan (Lewis's Dog). She was not agitated or aggravated and she attacked for no known human reason. It had to be a dog thing because minutes before they were waking up & playing with (her child) before we went outside to potty. So anyway she got ahold of his neck wear he could not defend himself. The tugging & tearing went on for over 10 mins till police arrived. They quickly assessed the dogs & seen Hogan was not going to hold on much longer. His face was blue and both dogs were exhausted. The officer & I then needed to make a choice as what to do. Unfortunately Khalees had to be put down. She was beyond reason, water being thrown on, or prying her off..every time she let go shed just get a bigger hold then she went for his groin and this was sure to kill him in seconds..I had been screaming & crying for about 15 mins by then. Everything is kind of a blur in & out.
Lewis arrived on the scene 3 mins later. He rushed Hogan to the vet because I had (her child) (rather a neighbor did) and I was in no shape to drive from shaking & crying so hard at what just happened. I was so distraught I couldn't think right. It was 7:30am by now..and I had to go see my girl Keesy. I won't give details but from what I seen she didn't have a mark on her except blood on her face from her wound. I cleaned her up while praying for her to find her Heaven and go there & be at peace & play with my doggie Pepe who passed away a few years ago. I'm beside myself for now losing her. So all this while Lewis is at Vet with Hogan who had lost a lot of blood & they had to stop the bleeding asap before Hogan lost too much. I was so worried he'd not make it. He had to have surgery where his neck & leg arteries were. And it was a "process" the vet said as to putting him back together. He has stitches from his head to his jowl & further down his neck. Puncture wounds all over & then a large area of repair down by his groin. The vet was so kind to take 1/2 payment down before treatment & we could pay the remainder when we picked him up later. Today he's back for another visit, and back Monday to remove the three draining tubes put at the sites. He has a way to go to be back our fat lazy ol' Hogan but he should be ok. The vet said she never had a better more determined patient. It's hard to say I'm happy that Hogan is ok when I'm so sad for losing Khalees. But it's the situation our family is left with.
A generous donation to Hogans Vet bill was called into VCA Animal Hospital by Khalees's foster Mom Kristie Hilton.
Also Thank you to Officer Bill Smith for all his help & coming to our house this morning with condolence card for us & a get well card, treats & toy for Hogan.
This tragic day will remain in our memories forever as will my love for Khaleesi.
Life can change so quickly. Love everyone & make them as happy as it were the last day you see them because it happened to me. I was a great doggie Mommy & I know Keesy loves me. I feel her still here with me. I keep looking in the back yard for her. Please keep our family in your prayers.
Thanks for caring enough to read this post.
Hogan will never be the same.
His face may never be symmetrical again, and his leg will never work right.

Jun 03, 2013 Two Chicago pit bulls maul 3 year old boy
UPDATE: When the attack on the 3 year old occurred, four visiting children under the age of 9 had been left alone with the pit bulls, one of which was pregnant or had recently given birth.
A day after the serious attack on the three year old child who is still in the hospital, the vicious pit bulls are still in the owner's home. CACC came to confiscate the dogs, but since no one answered the door, they just left a notice on the door. Wow.
Chicago - A 3 year old boy was mauled by two pit bulls inside a building on the 7300 block of south Kingston. He was taken first to a fire station across the street from the incident and from there taken to Comer Children's Hospital with multiple puncture wounds around his head and his legs.
The boy was visiting the owner of the pit bulls. A neighbor jumped a fence and entered the home because he heard the toddler screaming. Fire Dept Captain Bob Martin said the man probably saved the child's life.
The child's condition is unknown, but he is expected to survive.
At least one of the pit bulls remained in the owner's home. Why?

The pit bull was still attacking the boy when police arrived who were able to get the pit bull off the boy. The pit bull then began attacking the police and was shot.
The boy died at Cottage hospital.
The sole Illinois news outlet that has covered this story is local and has not disclosed the type of dog involved. The first outlet to speak to investigators and report the type of dog was KWQC in Iowa.
In the 2011 fatal pit bull mauling in Rockford, AP Illinois never acknowledged that the dogs were pit bulls and this fatality received very little media attention.
In the 2011 fatal pit bull mauling in Rockford, AP Illinois never acknowledged that the dogs were pit bulls and this fatality received very little media attention.
UPDATE: Another local outlet, WGIL, reported the story, repeating earlier stories and confirming that the police had not released the identity of the child or the kind of dog involved.
However WHBF-TV out of Rock Island, IL interviewed the owners of the pit bull who said they'd owned the pit bull for one and a half years. and that it not ever shown aggression before. They describe the horror of a vicious pit bull attack that they were unable to stop.
"Family members say they'll never forget the screaming and the brutal scene of their dog mauling a child."
UPDATE: Ryan Maxwell is the name of the seven year old fatal pit bull attack victim. The Peoria Journal Star news report gave us some insights into the little light lost to pit bulls. He was generous and helpful. He touched and engaged everyone at Nielson elementary where he attended second grade. He was popular and liked by students and staff ever helpful and wanting to please. Rest in Peace.

UPDATE: Deisel the pit bull belonged to RUSIN's girlfriend.
Oak Lawn - JEREMY RUSIN, 21, was charged with battery, domestic battery and assault when he let his pit bull, Deisel, attack his mother three times. He is being held on $20,0000 bond.
RUSIN stood by and watched as Deisel mauled his mother, and he assaulted an alarmed passerby who called police.
According to police, RUSIN's mother was taken to the hospital by her sister.
Amazingly and bizarrely, animal control was not called to control and confiscate the dog. Instead, police told RUSIN's girlfriend to take the dog to Animal Welfare League even though they had judged Deisel to be "aggressive and unapproachable."

Big Rock - The mastiff that killed its new owner, firefighter Dawn Brown, was a bull breed. Just as developers of the pit bull terrier cross bred terriers with bulldogs to give them deadly gripping traits, developers of the bullmastiff were bred from 60% mastiff and 40% bulldog to create a more aggressive mastiff.
As has been widely reported, the bullmastiff was a new addition to the family and the dogs were not getting along together. There has been speculation that Brown attempted to break up a dogfight.
Dawn Brown was a gripping breed lover. Her two other dogs were a pit bull mix and a boxer.
The bullmastiff was euthanized.

Bloomington has regular problems with pit bulls and the issue of enacting BSL to protect residents came up most recently this spring in May.
The McLean County Animal Control is going to evaluate the dogs to determine if they're "safe enough to bring home."
For their story, the Pantagraph asked a local no kill shelter to voice their opinion on BSL with predictable reponse.
Bloomington aldermen and the mayor ought to look at some of the over 500 towns and cities that have enacted successful pit bull laws across the US.
Pit Bull Laws Save Lives
Lancaster, CA found that instituting a pit bull ban helped lower gang crime as well as dog attacks.
Pawtucket, RI with a similar size population to Bloomington, has found enormous success with their legislation:
"Holmes says he predicted that it would take two years for Pawtucket to experience the full benefit of the law after it was passed, but the results were actually apparent in half the time.
"It's working absolutely fantastic," said Holmes. "We have not had a pit bull maiming in the city since December of 2004."
The Pawtucket ban is so successful, neighboring Woonsocket is working to institute their own ban.

Sep 06, 2012 Oak Forest Dog Owner: 'Neighbor's Pit Bull Killed My Dog'
![]() |
| RIP Powder |
Oak Forest - Bonnie Fouts-Bell, owner of two American Eskimo dogs, was horrified to find that her 15 year old male, Powder, was in the neighbor's yard with the neighbor's pit bull. Powder had been so severely mauled, the pit bull broke his neck, that the had to be euthanized.
The veterinarian that saw Powder after the mauling said that he believed Powders injuries were consistent with being dragged under the fence, but could not state this with certainty.
Even though the owner of the pit bull, RAUL BUSTOS, was not at home at the time, having left the pit bull unattended in the yard all day, he feels that the 15 year old dog must have wriggled under the fence into his yard to be killed by the pit bull.
BUSTOS also criticizes Power's owner because she has sprayed both her dogs and his dog when they have barking matches at the fence. An interesting question to pose to BUSTOS would be "What did you do to stop the barking at the fence?"
Police chief Greg Anderson said that they could only send letters of recommendations to the owners to prevent the pit bull from killing again. Anderson told Bouts-Bell that it is she who should make her fence pit bull proof.

Aug 16, 2012 Man Killed By Own Pit Bulls In Englewood
UPDATE - A subsequent news article shows an interview with Hagerman's family who say that the dogs were not the friendly pets described by Daryl Williams, the owner of the dogs. Hagerman's mother, Salithia Maybell, and his neice, Zarquil Boston, both described previous attacks on animals and humans, one killing a dog. These updates are discussed at dogsbite.org
When his wife and her son returned to their home, Hagerman was dead and some reports indicate one dog was still mauling his body. The dogs had torn off all his clothes and torn off half of his face.
The dogs, 3 1/2 yo Scrappy and his offspring, Rocco, were reportedly well cared for and loved and there was no indication that the dogs were dangerous, though Scrappy was territorial.
A neighbor reported seeing the dogs being walked regularly. Daryl William, the son of Hagerman's wife, reported that the dogs slept in Hagerman's bedroom. The family, at a loss to explain why these dogs killed their owner, suspects that Hagerman may have had a seizure which scared the them.
Police had to shoot the dogs to remove them from the apartment.

Aug 06, 2012 Police: South Elgin officer kills pit bull attacking family
This pit bull attack occurred in the small Village of South Elgin which is not to be confused with the City of Elgin. South Elgin has a median household income of $80,879; 3% of the population lives below the poverty level; has a 90.6% home ownership rate.
Sgt. Craig Steurer
South Elgin - Police Sgt. Craig Steurer was called to a dog attack in progress in a South Elgin home. He said he could tell by the call that this was no "normal" bite and release kind of dog attack.
When he arrived, he found the woman faintly crying for help, lying motionless face down on the floor with a pit bull clamped on her arm. Steurer reported that she was completely covered in smeared blood.
The pit bull was "actively chewing and pulling on her right arm."
He managed to get the pit bull off her, but when it appeared menacing, he shot the pit in the head.
Sgt Steurer is being hailed as a hero. This is not the first time he has had to shoot a pit bull to stop it from attacking. Last year he shot a pit bull that was biting the heel of a fellow officer on duty.
He said that what went through his mind was, "The damage these things can do."
The woman's niece and nephew had closed themselves in a bedroom, but the nephew had also been bitten.
Initial reports said that both the woman and the nephew had been taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin and later had to be transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hosptial in Park Ridge with serious injuries.

Jul 25, 2012 Galesburg Pit bull attacks mail carrier - Postal official says attack are up and wants city to step in
Galesburg - After city letter carrier Joe Weech was bitten by a pit bull during his delivery route, members of the Galesburg Post Office are hoping the city will take steps to help prevent similar attacks in the future.
It’s not unusual to deal with unruly dogs while delivering mail, Weech said. He averages one or two encounters with dogs per month, although he said he has noticed an upswing in the past few years.
“I’ve had a lot of close calls,” Weech said. “But the dog bites (overall) are getting to be more serious, and I’ve probably faced more dog situations in the last two years than I have in the previous 10.”

Jun 27, 2012 Naperville cops probe pit bull attack on boy
Naperville - An attack by a pit bull on Naperville’s southwest side sent a teenage boy to the hospital.
–––––––
“I remember hearing both boys laughing at first, then something like, ‘Whoa! Whoa! Down! Then the screaming started.”
“The dog ... was growling and attacking the boy and had ahold of his arm and would not let go. The other boy yelled at the dog and tried to pull him off, but the dog kept attacking, and the boy being attacked kept screaming.”
–––––––
“It was a horrifying experience, and as far as I could tell unprovoked, and I won’t soon forget that boy’s screams,” the resident said.
“I am more concerned about that dog. I think it should be put down, or at the very least removed from the home. It would be a big relief to know the dog is gone.”
