Dec 11, 2017 Alsip Pit Bull Killed 77-year-old Woman

Alsip - A pit bull attacked and killed an elderly woman on the back deck of her house at 11604 S. Komensky Ave. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified her as 76-year-old Dorothy Ford.  The pit bull was owned by a family member and had lived with the victim for six years, since it was a puppy.
Alsip IL, doesn't need pit bulls

Police were alerted by a neighbor who saw the pit bull attacking while out walking his own dog. After police arrived, the pit bull continued acting aggressively and police shot and killed it.  The police reported that the pit bull appeared well-fed and was well cared for.  There were no previous complaints about the dog from neighbors to police or animal control.

"It was pretty horrific," said Deputy Chief Shawn Schuldt of the Alsip Police Department. "If I go through the rest of my career without seeing something like this, that would be a good thing. I feel extremely bad for the family and we offer them our condolences."

The most recent serious dog attack in Alsip previous to this was also perpetrated by a pit bull.  Please read the reporting on that attack HERE.  The Chicago Tribune treated the reporting as if the fate of the pit bull was more important than the welfare of the victim or the safety of the neighborhood.

2017 Quincy Pit Bull Kills Family Member in February

Quincy - On February 27th of this year 21 year-old Jamie Owsley was killed by a pit bull in his own home.  The local and state news outlets reported virtually nothing on the fatal attack and did no follow-ups on the attack at all.  They failed to confirm that the cause of death was the dog attack, calling it "an apparent dog attack."  The local news outlets failed to report that the killer dog was a family pit bull that the victim routinely slept with in his bed.  Local outlets also failed to report that the killer pit bull had at least 3 reported bites, including one attack on a child and one that required stitches.

The only reason we know what happened is because DogsBite.org filed a Freedom of Information request, received a full police report on the attack, and reported on Jamie Owsley's death.  No local or state news outlet bothered to do the bare minimum of reporting on the attack even after the killer pit bull's owner, KERRY D. TALBURT II,  was subsequently arrested and charged with six felonies which included aggravated battery because he allegedly sicced another of his pit bulls on another man in July.

Jamie Owsley, victim; Hercules the Killer; Kerry Talburt II, pit bull owner
The police report states that Jamie Owsley died as a result of "penetrating and crushing injuries to the neck, due to dog attack."  The day previous to the attack Owsley reportedly had suffered a seizure.  The attack occurred at 3:26am, Sunday February 26.  Owsley's roommate, relative, and the owner of Hercules, the killer pit bull, KERRY TALBURT II, woke up when he heard the attack, got Hercules the pit bull off Owsley and called his grandfather who came and took Jamie and Kerry to the hospital where Jamie was pronounced dead.

The coroner's report states that there were no defensive injuries suggesting that Owsley was alive but incapacitated at the time of the attack, suggesting that he may have been seizing at the time.  Owsley regularly slept with Hercules and was well known to the pit bull. Hercules the killer pit bull latched onto Jamie's neck and crushed his "larynx and hyoid bone."

According to police, Talburt said he owned three pit bulls.  He said that Hercules, a 4-year-old male pit bull did not get along with the other two pit bulls, Java (2 yrs) and Hoss (1.5 yrs) so when Hercules was out of his cage, the other two had to be caged.  The typical sleeping arrangement was for the other two pit bulls to sleep in their cages in the bedroom with Talburt while Hercules slept in the living room on a bed with Owsley.

Police received a call from the Blessing Hospital emergency room about a person having been attacked by a dog at 1005 Jersey St.  Police say that the attack happened at 3:26 a.m. on Sunday morning.  The man died as a result of the attack, but the police and coroner’s office are investigating.

No information has been released about the dog that attacked 21 year-old Jamie Owsley in his own home.

We received a photo of the victim with a dog named Molly that resembles a pit bull.

Pit bull attacks and dogfighting has been a problem in Quincy since the 19th century.

UPDATE: May 26, 2015 Chicago Pit Bull Fatally Mauls 5 Year Old Boy

UPDATE - "James Nevils III and his 7-year-old sister had been outside with the dog while staying at their cousin's home in the 8900 block of South Carpenter Street Monday night, according to a police report. Their mother let the dog and the children back into the house and was locking the door when the dog bit into the boy's neck, the report said."

UPDATE - Police say they issued two citations to the owner of a pit bull that killed a five year old boy, but no charges will be brought against the man whose identity is being protected.

UPDATE - Chicago Animal Care and Control is once again refusing to acknowledge a pit bull that launched a fatal attack is a pit bull.
"Brad Powers, a spokesman for the Commission on Animal Care and Control, said the dog was "large and muscular."
"While we have no way to confirm a dog breed based on physical characteristics alone, the animal has features consistent with the Dogo Argentino breed," he said in an email."

People can identify pit bulls by physical appearance.  That obvious fact has been upheld by court decisions.

Powers' other statement is true, however, because every single pit bull does, in fact, have features consistent with the Dogo Argentino breed because pit bulls and other related gripping dog breeds were all foundation stock for the development of Dogo Argentinos which were developed for the exact same purposes as pit bulls and all gripping dogs - dog fighting and "hunting" by attacking large game. See this link and this link for more about Dogos and their relationship to pit bulls.

Thankfully, the dangerous gripping breed Dogo Argentino is still fairly scarce in the United States.  On two pages of Dogo Argentino Breeder websites, no puppies were available immediately and all were being bred as catch dogs for hog dogging.  On BYB breeder sites, there was one single Dogo puppy listed for $1800.  The rest of the Dogo puppies were listed for between $2400 and $3300.

So, the expert handlers at CACC looked at a white (and some say white and brown) pit bull, with supposedly no other information, and jumped to the conclusion that instead of a pit bull mix, they were looking at different, rare, expensive, related pit fighting/big game hunting dog.

This is not the first time that CACC has tried to hide the pit bull.  In 2010, after Johnny Wilson was killed by his daughter's 6 pit bulls, then director Cherie Travis contended that the killer dogs were completely unidentifiable mixed breeds.

It is downright frightening that CACC persists in misleading the public in order to protect pit bulls.

UPDATE - An autopsy on Tuesday found James W. Nevils III died of multiple sharp and blunt force injuries to his head and his neck. His death was ruled an accident.

Chicago - A 5 year old boy, James W. Nevils III, was fatally attacked by a pit bull according to witnesses.  The pit bull had the boy by the throat and was shaking him around.  Neighbors came and beat, bludegeoned and stabbed the pit bull to death with a brick, pole and knife to get it to stop the attack.
RIP sweet boy
The attack evidently began inside a home the victim was visiting with his mother. A neighbor said,

“They were trying to drag it out of the house, I guess so people could help. So my brother went across the street to get a chair to get the dog off the baby but it didn’t work.”

In what is typical of pit bull attacks, after the pit bull was disengaged from the victim once, it went back to attack.  When they finally had killed the pit bull to stop the attack, James Nevils was lifeless.

Witnesses reported that seeing this lifeless boy was the worst thing they'd ever seen.

The dog owner, the victim's adult cousin, was not there when the attack happened.  He returned home after James was taken to the hospital.

Neighbor Lamar Lewis said, "All I heard was, 'Why y'all let the dog out?' Because he knew what kind of dog he had. So them letting the dog out, he knew what was possible to happen."

Several outlets are reporting this, including a couple local and one national outlet.  All but the Tribune and Fox news have mentioned that witnesses had seen the dog around the neighborhood, were familiar with it, and identified it as a pit bull.

THE EMPEROR HAS NO CLOTHES
AND
ILLINOIS LEGISLATORS HAVE NO EXCUSES
Bloomington has had several serious pit bull attacks and a nearby recent fatality in recent years.  Last year, 2013, the city government opted to do nothing to address the pit bull problem and enacted a dangerous dog ordinance will not in any way stop serious and fatal pit bull attacks.  The year before that, 2012, the city council looked at dog control ordinances after a pit bull attack and did nothing.  Shame on them.  We need elected officials in Illinois to stand up to interest groups and do what's right.  Cities around Illinois are grappling with pit bull attacks but none have done anything to protect children, innocent people and pets from pit bulls.

Dec 8, 2013 Chicago Fatal Pit Bull Attack: 2 year old Jah'Niyah White

A 2 year old Chicago girl, Jah'Niyah White was killed by her grandfather's pit bulls, Brownie and General Chico while she was reportedly left unattended in his apartment.  The family has said the dogs are pit bulls and calls from reporters at the Chicago Tribune to Chicago Animal Care and Control have not been answered.

Rest in Peace Beloved Ladybug
She was much loved by her parents and grandparents.  Her mother and father, Kashairah Gardner John White of Missouri, are arranging to have her Christmas presents donated to the needy. Britt Williams-Nelson, Jah'Niyah's paternal grandmother, who called Jah'Niyah her Ladybug, said that Jah'Niyah was the smartest 2 year old she'd ever met.

The medical examiner's office determined that Jah'Niyah died from dog bite injuries with contributing factor being neglect and called the death a homicide, however the police department's investigation is so far non-criminal.  The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is investigating the girl's grandfather for allegations of abuse pertaining to the child's death.

Galesburg - A seven year old boy playing in the backyard of a home he was visiting was killed by a pit bull that may have broken its restraint to get to the boy.

The pit bull was still attacking the boy when police arrived who were able to get the pit bull off the boy.  The pit bull then began attacking the police and was shot.

The boy died at Cottage hospital.

The sole Illinois news outlet that has covered this story is local and has not disclosed the type of dog involved.  The first outlet to speak to investigators and report the type of dog was KWQC in Iowa.

In the 2011 fatal pit bull mauling in Rockford, AP Illinois never acknowledged that the dogs were pit bulls and this fatality received very little media attention.

UPDATE: Another local outlet, WGIL, reported the story, repeating earlier stories and confirming that the  police had not released the identity of the child or the kind of dog involved.

However WHBF-TV out of Rock Island, IL interviewed the owners of the pit bull who said they'd owned the pit bull for one and a half years. and that it not ever shown aggression before.  They describe the horror of a vicious pit bull attack that they were unable to stop.

"Family members say they'll never forget the screaming and the brutal scene of their dog mauling a child."

UPDATE: Ryan Maxwell is the name of the seven year old fatal pit bull attack victim.  The Peoria Journal Star news report gave us some insights into the little light lost to pit bulls.  He was generous and helpful.  He touched and engaged everyone at Nielson elementary where he attended second grade.  He was popular and liked by students and staff ever helpful and wanting to please. Rest in Peace.

Big Rock - The mastiff that killed its new owner, firefighter Dawn Brown, was a bull breed.  Just as developers of the pit bull terrier cross bred terriers with bulldogs to give them deadly gripping traits, developers of the bullmastiff were bred from 60% mastiff and 40% bulldog to create a more aggressive mastiff.

As has been widely reported, the bullmastiff was a new addition to the family and the dogs were not getting along together.  There has been speculation that Brown attempted to break up a dogfight.
Dawn Brown was a gripping breed lover.  Her two other dogs were a pit bull mix and a boxer.

The bullmastiff was euthanized.

Aug 16, 2012 Man Killed By Own Pit Bulls In Englewood

UPDATE - A subsequent news article shows an interview with Hagerman's family who say that the dogs were not the friendly pets described by Daryl Williams, the owner of the dogs.  Hagerman's mother, Salithia Maybell, and his neice, Zarquil Boston, both described previous attacks on animals and humans, one killing a dog.   These updates are discussed at dogsbite.org

Chicago - The Cook County Medial Examiner's office concluded that Charles Hagerman, 44, was killed by one or both of his pit bulls in his Englewood home.

When his wife and her son returned to their home, Hagerman was dead and some reports indicate one dog was still mauling his body.  The dogs had torn off all his clothes and torn off half of his face.

The dogs, 3 1/2 yo Scrappy and  his offspring, Rocco, were reportedly well cared for and loved and there was no indication that the dogs were dangerous, though Scrappy was territorial.

A neighbor reported seeing the dogs being walked regularly.  Daryl William, the son of Hagerman's wife, reported that the dogs slept in Hagerman's bedroom.  The family, at a loss to explain why these dogs killed their owner,  suspects that Hagerman may have had a seizure which scared the them.

Police had to shoot the dogs to remove them from the apartment.

This fatal pit bull attack was not picked up by national news outlets. The initial local reports correctly identified the dogs as pit bulls though subsequent reports suggested the dogs were american bulldogs.  AP Illinois' miniscule coverage mentioned no breed in a report a month after local Animal Services confirmed the dogs were pit bulls through a FOI request from the Rockford Register Star.

Who runs CACC and why won't Chicago Punish Irresponsible Pit Bull Owners?

Comments from the Chicago Breaking News Center story

In response to the comment by "Mark on January 18, 2010 11:31 AM". I, too, am an Animal Control Officer and firmly believe that it doesn't matter how you raise them, it is the breed itself that is the problem.
I have been out on calls where people's beloved pets have been shredded to pieces by pits in front of them. I have been on calls where people have been trapped in their home and the pit is outside trying to tear the door down to get to them. I have seen an elderly woman's bloody arms after a pit bull attacked and killed her beloved Corgi. She beat the pit with piece of wood and was attacked by it. I had to respond to a 19 year old kid who was attacked by his own pit bull. His hand was "de-gloved" of its skin! It is NOT just a coincidence that they're pit and pit mixes. And it is not just the media reporting on pit attacks as I am the Officer who responded to the calls.
Yes, all dogs can bite but the pit has been destroyed by bad breeding. In the meantime, the government has a responsibility to protect people from them. They need to enact breed specific legislation as most owners won't bother having a quarter million in liability insurance on their pit unless forced to do so.
James Cherokee on January 18, 2010 12:30 PM
Just because a pit bull is raised as a puppy in loving care does not mean that the breed itself is not a naturally aggressinve breed of canine. I'm a vet and have seen/heard stories like this many times. Case in point; a pit raised by a perfect caring family for 6 years sees a neighboring 4 year old girl running outside playing in HER yard, the dog busted through the screen and nearly killed her. I was treating a pit once and was great with people but almost tore my arm off as it tried to leap at a smaller dog. The fact is that these dogs despite some loving characteristics are VERY unpredictable regardless of upbringing or care. Poor bredding practices have also helped ruin this line of dogs. Those who challenge that German Shepards are equally as agressive are dead wrong. Shepards are a very intelligent and loyal dogs and upon proper care, will be as good and docile of a dog as a bassett. This is from an advice pamphlet in my office about choosing a dog; interesting how this is specific towards a specific breed of dog:
Unstable temperaments. American Pit Bull Terriers are a dime a dozen today, and most of them are bred and offered for sale by people who don't have the slightest idea of how to breed good-tempered dogs who can function in our society. Obedience instructors and behavioral consultants see LOTS of Pit Bulls with flat-out dangerous temperaments. It is difficult to find a responsible breeder when one has to sort through all the hype from macho breeders who boast about their dogs' "power" and "invincibility."
Extreme animal aggression. Most Pit Bull Terriers are aggressive toward other dogs. Many have strong instincts to chase and seize cats and other fleeing creatures, including deer and livestock. If anything goes wrong in the breeding, socializing, training, handling, or management of this breed, it is capable of seriously injuring or killing other animals.

Dec 01, 2009 Flora, Illinois Woman Killed in American Pit Bull Terrier Attack

FLORA PD, JOHN NICHOLSON, CHIEF: The incident that occurred on November 30th at 235 Austin Avenue in Flora has devastated several families. This was a very tragic event for not only the families involved, but the neighborhood a well.

Rosie L. Humphreys, 85, of 235 Austin Avenue Flora, Illinois was not only a citizen of Flora, but was so much more to so many. After speaking to several neighbors and friends in this neighborhood, it became apparent that Rosie was everybody’s Grandmother within that area. This is exactly why this case is so tragic, as Ms. Humphrey could have been anybody’s grandmother at any town USA.

Before I go into a timeline of the events of November 30th, I would like to clarify some mis-information, clear some dis-information and stop some on going rumors.

The particular breed of the dog involved in the attack was an American Pit Bull Terrier. He was an un-neutered 3 year old male, with full registration. The dog was purchased from a registered breeder at 6 months of age by Brian Pennington of Flora. There is no available information that it had ever been trained by its owner, Brian Pennington to attack or fight in any manner.

The dog was Pennington’s family pet.

The Flora Police Department or the Clay County Health Department Animal Control office have never received a single call as to this particular dog or the owners address at any time.

There has been no documented or reported cases, where this dog has displayed any aggression towards people or other dogs.

The dog did not appear malnourished or abused and had no visible signs of mistreatment.

The dog did not slip its collar, break the chain or dig its way out of the kennel.

The dog according to several neighbors seemed friendly and was not habitually loose.

Based upon witness statements, and several interviews the following time line was established by the Flora Police Department.

November 30th at 11:15 a.m., Mr. Pennington observes his dog chained and secured in the dog kennel area of his back yard from inside his house.

Approximately 2:00 p.m. four different neighbors within the area of Mr. Pennington’s residence observed the dog running loose.

One particular witness was working in his garage when Mr. Pennington’s dog came into the garage with him.

The witness stated the dog acted friendly and showed no signs of aggression. The dog then left the garage.

Of the four witnesses, no reports were called into the Flora Police Department or the Animal Control to report a dog loose in the area.

Approximately 2:16 p.m., Mrs. Humphreys leaves her residence to walk her two dogs, which were poodles.

Shortly thereafter Mrs. Humphreys and her dogs were attacked by Mr. Pennington’s dog. The attack occurred at the end of her driveway and the sidewalk area.

A passerby in the roadway observed the initial attack. The pit bull was observed by this witness to be attacking on of the poodles of which Mrs. Humphreys was trying to protect by pulling her dog up to her chest area, while kicking and striking the pit bull.

The witness had pulled her car over and went to assist Mrs. Humphreys who by this time had fallen on the ground and was now being attacked by the pit bull herself.

The witness yelled out for help and several people then began to assist in the efforts of removing the pit bull off Mrs. Humphreys.

At approximately 2:18 p.m., a call was placed to the Flora Police Department to report this attack.
The pit bull was eventually controlled and first aid was rendered to Mrs. Humphreys unsuccessfully, as she was pronounced dead at the scene.

At this time the Flora Police Department secured the area as a crime scene and began an investigation.

An Illinois State Police Crime Scene Tech was then called to assist in the collection of evidence.
After the collection of evidence and photographs taken, interviews were conducted.

Upon inspection it was determined Mr. Pennington’s dog had gotten loose because the metal “D” ring on its collar failed. Meaning the metal D ring had broken allowing the locked clasp on the chain to fall away from the leather collar.

The collar was a brown leather collar of normal wear and of normal weight for this type of dog. Mr. Pennington’s dog was estimated to weigh approximately 60 pounds.

All available evidence indicates that the factory installed metal “D” ring on the leather collar broke, which released the dog. The metal “D” ring was of normal size for this collar type. The metal appeared normal in wear and condition.

On December 1, 2009 a forensic autopsy was conducted by Dr. John Heidingsfelder at the Clay County Hospital. The preliminary results showed the cause of death was due to Exsanguination, due to transected Carotid Artery, due to bite mark lacerations to the face, neck and extremities. The manner of death was ruled accident.

After careful review of the applicable criminal statutes that could apply to this case and all physical evidence, witness statements, and background investigations, it was determined by the Clay County State’s Attorney’s Office that there will be no criminal charges filed at this time against Mr. Pennington. The case will remain in an open status for an undermined amount of time, so as if factual information or physical evidence is obtained, the case could and will move forward.

Jun 27, 2009 Pit Bulls Fatally Maul 3 year old Boy Johnston City

Johnston City is a small town of 3,557 people (2010 census) in southern Illinois. In September 2007, the Johnston City Council passed a pit bull ban. The council was responding to some recent pit bull attacks and were confident the ban would successfully protect the citizens of Johnston City from continued pit bull attacks.
RIP Gabrial Mandrell-Sauerhage

Jim Mills, who had his dog torn out of his hands and killed by a pit bull and had a finger torn off fighting off the pit bull in the same attack, supported the ban.

The fire chief supported the ban. "I think it's a great thing, the ordinance it protects us, it protects everyone else who has to go into a house or yard. We need the protection because we don't know what we're walking into when we get to most emergency calls," he said.

A non-resident pit  bull advocate who opposed the ban said that it was unfair to pit bulls.

Nine days after the ban was announced Ledy VanKavage issued a statement that the Johnston City's ordinance was illegal. VanKavage herself crafted the ban on breed bans that took vital decision making powers out of the hands of the local elected government.

Less than two years later, 3 year old Gabrial Mandrell-Sauerhage was killed by pit bulls in same small town of Johnston City.

While it can't be known if Gabrial's death would have been prevented by a pit bull ban, it is clear that the town's elected leaders did correctly identify pit bulls as the specific threat to their community and that a pit bull ban only could have improved Gabrial's chances of survival.

The perceived "unfairness" to pit bulls pales in the face of a child's death.

This tragic series of events demonstrates with crystalline clarity that localities must be free to address local safety issues to protect their citizens. The statewide ban on BSL obviously doesn't protect children. It doesn't even protect pit bulls. It ONLY protects pit bull owners and breeders.

Johnston City - Three dogs apparently involved in the death of a 3-year-old Johnston City boy were euthanized at 9 a.m. Tuesday, according to Williamson County Sheriff Tom Cundiff.

Williamson County Coroner Mike "Junior" Burke previously said the child sustained a number of dog bites, but one specific bite caused him to hemorrhage.

The couple had three dogs, two pit bull mixes and a collie mix.

The release went on to state that Gabrial suffered at least one bite that would have made "yelling impossible."

Aug 01, 2001 Chicago Bulldogs Kill Owner

Chicago - A 77-year-old Logan Square man found dead in his home with a puddle of blood at his feet apparently was killed by his own two bulldogs, the Cook County medical examiner ruled Tuesday.
Alexander Gillis was unresponsive when his son-in-law found him sitting in a kitchen chair about 10 p.m. Monday in the man's home in the 2600 block of West Logan Boulevard, according to a police spokeswoman.

When paramedics arrived a short time later, they noted that Gillis had multiple puncture wounds and lacerations to both of his calves, and tourniquets were tied around both of his ankles in an apparent effort to try to stop the bleeding.
It was unclear who tied the tourniquets, police said. Gillis' death, however, was caused by "multiple injuries from a dog attack," a Cook County spokeswoman said. The medical examiner's office has ruled the death accidental.
Police at the scene found Gillis' blood trailing through the house to the basement, where they found what police identified as two adult male English bulldogs.
But a spokeswoman for the city's Animal Care and Control unit said the dogs were either English or American bulldogs. They will remain at the city's pound until further notice from police, she said.
"Animal Control indicated that the dogs were very calm when they received them," police spokeswoman JoAnn Taylor said. Taylor said police are still investigating the matter, and it is unclear whether one or both dogs were involved in the killing and what--if anything--may have prompted the attack.
Priscilla Scienski, 79, Gillis' next-door neighbor, said Gillis loved the dogs and she would often see him playing with them.
"He said he bought the dogs for the kids, but I think he was the one who really cared for them," Scienski said.
