Whiting IN - Martin Jakubowski, Whiting IN Superintendent of Animal Control and Parks admits to helping convicted dogfighter Pedro Cuellar of Willow Springs in several ways. Jakubowski housed several of Cuellar’s pit bulls for him on several occassions from 2011 to 2016. He gave Cuellar expired antibiotics that were the property of the city shelter. And he gave the dogfighte two pit bulls without paperwork knowing that that the dogfighter intended to transfer the pit bulls to other people. Jakubowski was involved in a “roll” dog fight in 2004.

Nov 17, 2016 Harvey Man Charged with Training Pit Bulls for Dogfighting

Harvey - A Harvey man has been charged with training dogs to fight at his south suburban home.

Tyran Johnson, 59, faces one count of possession of dogfighting equipment, according to the Cook County sheriff’s office.

Sheriff’s police received a tip that Johnson was training dogs to fight at his home in the 14700 block of Washington Avenue in Harvey.

On Nov. 4, investigators executed a search warrant at his home and found four dogs, one of whom had scars and appeared to be underweight, another who had scars, another who was underweight and another who appeared to be healthy, according to the sheriff’s office.

They also found a modified treadmill and spring poles among other equipment associated with dogfighting.

Chicago - A Willow Springs man is accused of being part of a multi-state dog fighting ring, and the U.S. Justice Department says 66 dogs have been rescued.

46-year-old Pedro Cuellar of Willow Springs has been charged with violating the Animal Welfare Act.

The following quote from the news article, suggesting that a pit bull won a fight and then died because it was "sick," shows that the reporter doesn't understand that these dogs will fight while mortally wounded themselves, and that it is not uncommon that the winning pit bull also dies from injuries sustained during the fight.

The criminal complaint describes some of the conditions.
For example, it says authorities recorded one ring member talking about a dog that won a fight despite being obviously sick.
“He won, but we couldn’t save him,” he’s quoted as saying.“We lost the dog probably 15 minutes after the match.”

Apr 15, 2016 Rock Island Pit Bull Dogfighting Ring Busted - Quad Cities Overburdened with Pit Bulls

Rock Island - A year long investigation led to a dogfighting bust in the Quad Cities. The investigation involved U.S. Attorney's Office, the federal Drug Enforcement Agency, Illinois State Police, the Rock Island County State's Attorney's and Sheriff's offices, the Quad City Metropolitan Enforcement Group, Moline Police, East Moline Police, Davenport Police and the Scott County Sheriff's Department.

The ASPCA has taken and is housing over 60 pit bulls. Soon after the bust, local pit bull owners began voicing fears that their lost pit bulls had been stolen to become pit fighters. The ASPCA accidentally let the truth slip out about what they know to be true about fighting dogs when they assured the public that the dogfighters probably did not take their backyard pit bulls.

ASPCA representatives confirmed that dogfighters prefer to BREED THEIR OWN PIT BULLS FROM SPECIFIC BLOODLINES because the qualities that make good fighting dogs the best killers that ever existed are genetically controlled and passed on.

Does that mean the neighborhood pit bulls won’t kill any poodle or kitten that they happen upon? No. Because even backyard bred pit bulls have in their pedigree hundreds of dogs that were selected to breed solely because that dog was the best at killing. Backyard bred dogs are dangerous to normal dogs, cats and children even if they cannot win in the fighting pit.

Another truth about Quad City rescue pit bulls slipped out, as well. Dogfighters in populous places have no need for a losing fighting dog, but the dogfighters don’t shoot them and try to hide the body like they do in the country. Officials admitted that dogfighters in populous areas like the Quad Cities abandon the fighting pits on the street. Many stray pit bulls in the Quad Cities are likely fighting bred and conditioned.

These stray fighting pit bulls are picked up and taken to shelters where they are put up for adoption in the community. Although some pit bulls are losers in the fighting pit against other pits, they can and will kill any non-fighting breed dog, cat and even people with ease.

Three pit bulls were recently euthanized in Moline after they killed two Chinese Crested dogs in the victims’ own yard. It was reported that investigators couldn’t figure out why the pit bulls killed dogs off property and unprovoked. The answer is pit bull DNA.

A pit bull ban is the best choice for cities that have dogfighters and dogfighting problems. If pit bulls are banned, stray pit bulls become conspicuous and will allow authorities to find the dogfigthers. This is the exact problem that Pawtucket Rhode Island faced and a pit bull ban worked beautifully to stop the abuse of pit bulls and pit bull attacks until special interests forced Pawtucket to abandon the ban that saved pit bulls from being abused.

Rock Island and Moline are home rule cities and can enact BSL. Illinois has one of the most liberal home rule laws in the nation. Although the Illinois General Assembly has the power to take a way home rule powers by a 3/5ths vote of both houses or to provide for the exclusive state exercise of a power by a simple majority vote of both houses, courts have reaffirmed that “implied preemption is not sufficient to strike down local, home rule regulations (Bolingbrook v Citizens Utility Co,1994); (Barrington Police Pension Fund v Barrington Ethics Baord, 1997)” and has authorized local ordinances that are contrary to state statues (Rozner v Korshak, 1973).

Nov 17, 2015 Chicago Pit Bull Owner Arrested and Charged with Dogfighting

Chicago — An Englewood man is facing felony dog fighting charges.
Cook County sheriff’s officers and Chicago Police executed a search warrant Friday at Larue Jackson’s home in the 6300 block of South Throop Street, where investigators had received tips about dog fights happening, according to sheriff’s office spokeswoman Sophia Ansari.

They found 13 dogs, 12 of them without food or water, Ansari said. Some of them had scars consistent with fighting, and blood spattered the basement floor.
Another dog was found dead in the backyard. Jackson, 57, also had “items indicative of dogfighting,” such as bite sticks, dog medications and fighting ledgers, Ansari said.

Chicago - “A 43-year-old Fuller Park man was ordered held in Cook County Jail after he was charged with 10 felonies in connection with a dogfighting ring he's accused of running, according to police.

Clifford McNeil, was charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, felony dogfighting, misdemeanor animal owner duty violations and eight misdemeanor counts of cruelty to animals.

Police obtained "credible intelligence of animal cruelty and dog fighting activity" and gained entry to the yard and garage of a home in the 4800 block of South Shields about 10 a.m. Friday.”

“Police found 16 pit bulls on the property, including seven pit bulls connected to heavy chains in the yard, one pit bull in a cage filled with feces and a pit bull in a cage inside the garage, which was with seven two-week old pit bull puppies with no access to food or water, prosecutors said.

The yard and the dog houses in the yard were littered with feces, prosecutors said. No people lived in the garage.

Inside the garage, Police also discovered a modified treadmill with a chain and wooden boards designed to narrow the dog’s path, a modification “commonly indicative of training dogs to fight,” prosecutors said.”

“Neighbors raised questions about the charges against McNeil Saturday, and several agreed that McNeil had a “heart of gold.”

They said McNeil was simply a dog lover, and someone who anchored the neighborhood with his generosity. He cut neighbors’ lawns, worked on landscaping and allowed the neighbors to park their cars at the garage he maintained as an alternative to street parking.”

Chicago - A Chicago man is facing 21 felony charges alleging animal cruelty and dog fighting after police say they found 10 pit bulls in bad conditions in his home.

Juan Zamora faces dogfighting charges in Chicago

Chicago police said Tuesday that that 49-year-old Juan Zamora had turned himself in to face 10 counts of animal cruelty, 10 counts of failing to perform animal owner duties, and one count of possessing dog fighting equipment.

Police say a search of Zamora’s southeast side home Thursday found the dogs living in “deplorable” conditions. The dogs were turned over to Animal Care and Control for treatment.
Zamora was due to appear in bond court later Tuesday. It was not immediately clear whether he has an attorney who could comment on his case.

WIFR reporting emphasizes that the fighting pit bulls were pets and forced to fight to the death. It remains unclear why officers had to physically stop the pit bulls from fighting after the bad men ran away and the pit bulls were free from coercion.

May 14, 2015 Freeport Man Arrested After Officers Discover Dog Fight

Freeport - A 26-year-old Freeport man was arrested Wednesday night after police said they discovered him instigating a dog fight.

Kahill Brown is charged with dog fighting and resisting a peace officer after Freeport police saw him encouraging two pit bull dogs to fight in the backyard of a house in the 600 block of East Crocker Street at 11:16 p.m., Freeport Deputy Chief Jeff Mastroianni said. Officers saw Brown cursing at the dogs, encouraging one dog to kill the other, while holding his cellphone as if he were recording video, Mastroianni said.

Apr 18, 2015 Chicago South Side Woman Accused of Dogfighting and Animal Abuse

Chicago - A Far South Side woman accused of running a dog-fighting ring in her home starved two puppy pit bulls to death before hiding them in a closet, Cook County prosecutors said.

SHANTELL BURNETT ACCUSED DOGFIGHTER AND ANIMAL ABUSER

Police discovered the grisly scene after being called to a domestic disturbance Friday about 3 p.m. at 11758 S. Morgan Street, authorities said.

Police noticed a foul smell and asked if Shantell Burnett had any animals.

She opened the closet door where police viewed two dead tan puppy pit bulls who were covered in urine and feces, prosecutors said. The animals appeared if they had no access to food, water or light, prosecutors said.

UPDATE: photos of the dogfighters who, if pit bull advocates have their way, will get no jail time in exchange for blood money to put fighting dogs in your neighbor's home:

Dolton - Eight people were arrested and four pit bulls were recovered when police broke up a dog fight in progress. The dog fighters scurried like rats every which way and six of them were found hiding in the rafters - like rats.

Chicago area media, well-tutored by the pit bull promoters, reported that the dogs "looked like pit bulls" or didn't ascribe a breed to them at all and reported that the dogs had been "rescued."

And as usual, because this is Chicago, commenters are hoping that the "poor babies" can be adopted out. No thank you. I do not want a fight bust dog owned by a nincompoop who thinks they have to be forced to fight landing in my neighbor's yard.

Nov 26, 2012 Kids in Chicago don't see a problem with dogfighting

Chicago - Thanks to policies and programs by Safe Humane Chicago and Best Friends Animal Society that encourage pit bull ownership in poverty stricken neighborhoods infested with dogfighting, and placing fight bust dogs back into Chicago communities, small children are now wondering what the problem with dogfighting even is. They see it all the time, and, as 14 year old Jason Walker says, "I really don't see what the big deal is about making dogs fight. If two dogs want to fight then how is that illegal?"

Even though Safe Humane Chicago has been propagandizing about pit bulls to kids in Chicago communities for years, kids still don't see what the big deal about dogfighting is. Dogfighting is still a way of life.

So, by all means, let's continue to pump more pit bulls back into impoverished neighborhoods. And, by all means, let's take fight bust dogs and put THOSE pits back in Chicago neighborhoods providing cover for the dogfighters and endangering normal dogs.

Heaven forbid we ban pit bulls, removing cover for dogfighters and the opportunity for pre-teens to fight their pet pit bulls informally, preparing them for the big league.

Let's keep working to make Chicago more dangerous and more inhumane.

Loudoun VA - Tremain Dene Johnson, 44, of Lithonia, Ga., and Harry Ortice Puckett, 33, of Elgin, Ill., are charged with importing pet dogs into the Commonwealth of Virginia from another state without certificate of veterinary inspection, a Class 1 misdemeanor.

The men were stopped on the Dulles Greenway when an Loudoun Animal Control officer...found the men were in possession of 10 dogs that appeared to be pit bulls or pit bull mixes of varying ages and degrees of health.

“By law we can seize animals if we feel their health is a direct or immediate threat. These dogs met that criteria and we had grounds for seizing,” said Adrienne Burton, chief of Loudoun County Animal Control.
