Apr 07, 2011 Danville Letter to Editor: Dogs Kill Pet Cat name Pumpkin

Letters to the Editor

Editor:

DANVILLE — On March 19, two large dogs were running around the Holiday Hills subdivision. They entered my yard on Hillside Drive and killed my precious cat, Pumpkin. He was the smartest, most adventurous boy. He was the alpha in the house and in my heart. He was unhappy being confined by walls, so I let him spend time in the backyard. My heart is devastated, and a part of me has died.

I ask all residents of Holiday Hills and Danville to call animal control or the Humane Society if they see these two dogs, or any dog running loose. One is a brown pit-bull mix. The other is a white Labrador mix. Since these dogs have tasted blood, they will kill again. The next victim might be your small dog, cat or baby. These dogs are a danger to small children and infants.

The dogs who killed my cat did not wear collars. Do they have up-to-date rabies vaccines? If anyone knows any animal that is abused or neglected, please call the police or Humane Society. What if you, the human, were created as a dog who had to spend all its time alone or always tied to a tree or was hungry?

These dogs may have been hungry. I chased them away before they ate my Pumpkin. I quickly took my baby to a clinic, but a 10-pound cat cannot survive a bite to the throat from a 75-pound dog. If any person does claim these wild beasts, he or she should pay my veterinarian’s and cremation bills.

Danville does have a leash law. Please, everyone needs to help to put a stop to unsupervised dogs before another life gets injured or killed or causes a vehicle accident.

July 23, 2008 Panel begins work on dangerous dog laws

BY MARY WICOFF

DANVILLE — Adam Decker vividly recalled the evening two pit bulls kept him and his family prisoners in their own home. The neighbor’s dogs were loose and trying to get into Decker’s home and backyard.

...[T]he case is in court.

Panel member Carolyn Wands also recounted a time a couple of years ago when a neighbor’s pit bull got loose and, she said, “took a hunk out of the back of my leg. He clamped down and would not let go.”
That dog, which was destroyed, belonged to a family that apparently treated it with love.

Feb 28, 2008 Pit bull owner allowed declared dangrous pit to attack child

Danville – A city case against Bob Pape, owner of Pape Memorial Home & Gardens will go to trial.

Pape's pit bull dog allegedly snapped at a 2-year-old boy on Jan. 27 while the boy was attending a visitation for his grandfather at the funeral home. The dog, named Blue, typically accompanies Pape to work.

The dog had previously been declared dangerous. Since then, Pape has been required to keep the dog muzzled and leashed when not at home.

Pape said the dog was leashed but not muzzled when the incident occurred on Jan. 27.

Danville – Postal carriers have been the target of three attacks by dogs in three months.

Mar 14, 2007 Pit Bull Attack - Call for Outlawing Pit Bulls

by: Charles Vance

Danville – A man in Danville is recovering tonight after being attacked by two pit bulls.
–––––––
Fisher says he fought for several minutes to get away from the dogs, eventually climbing between a van and a fence, standing helpless and bleeding while the dogs jumped at him from below.
–––––––
[The owner] said they are good dogs and he has no idea what could have caused the attack
–––––––
The director [of the Humane Society] added they are seeing a significant increase in the number of calls about pit bulls, about two a day now, and he wants to see the dogs outlawed.

A followup article states that the dog was deemed dangerous after the unprovoked, off property human bite, but that the owners could get the dogs back per Anna's law.  Neighbors are upset the dog will be back in the neighborhood with an obviously oblivious owner.

Dec 30, 2006 Danville post office worker mauled by pit bulls

by Pam G. Dempsey

DANVILLE – Delivering mail Tuesday afternoon in the 100 block of South Griffin Street was a typical day on the job for local letter carrier Wendy Hoskins.

But three staples in her head, three stitches in her hand and several cuts and bruises later marked this day as the worst dog attack Hoskins has ever had in the 20 years she's worked for the United States Postal Service.

"They made a beeline, came across the whole street, charging me," Hoskins said of the two pit bull dogs that attacked at around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. "I was kicking and hitting and kicking and hitting. What made me survive is I fought back."
