Sterling – Grandparents who rushed in and beat a dog unconscious with a 2-by-4 may have saved a 6-year-old boy from being seriously injured when the animal attacked him Tuesday.

Whiteside County Animal Control is holding the American bulldog/pit bull terrier mix for 10 days, for observation.

The dog was tied up in its yard but pulled its chain from the ground and ran into the boy’s yard. The boy’s grandmother wrestled the dog to the ground, while his grandfather hit it several times in the head with a 2-by-4, knocking it out, police said.
