Mar 13, 2017 Belvidere Pit Bull Attacks Owner and Owner's Service Pit Bull

Belvidere - Lael Lewand is a super pit bull supporter. She has a supposed pit bull service dog named Isis and another big pit bull named Keiko. Lael started a facebook page for the pit bulls called Isis, head of the itty bitty pittie committee & Keiko too. Lael says on her page she has been diagnosed with several conditions including depression, bipolar disorder, and borderline personality disorder.

The big pit bull named Keiko attacked Isis. Lael's face was really torn up and she went to the emergency room in an ambulance. She put a photo of her damage, and the damage to Isis up in public facebook posts. There was no news outlet reporting of these attacks. Lael referred to previous attacks in a recent post.

The attacker is back home with the owner, but kept in his own room. A lonely old lab has to be kept in a bedroom, as well, to keep him from being attacked from both pit bulls.

Big Rock - The mastiff that killed its new owner, firefighter Dawn Brown, was a bull breed. Just as developers of the pit bull terrier cross bred terriers with bulldogs to give them deadly gripping traits, developers of the bullmastiff were bred from 60% mastiff and 40% bulldog to create a more aggressive mastiff.

As has been widely reported, the bullmastiff was a new addition to the family and the dogs were not getting along together. There has been speculation that Brown attempted to break up a dogfight.
Dawn Brown was a gripping breed lover. Her two other dogs were a pit bull mix and a boxer.

The bullmastiff was euthanized.

Aug 16, 2012 Man Killed By Own Pit Bulls In Englewood

UPDATE - A subsequent news article shows an interview with Hagerman's family who say that the dogs were not the friendly pets described by Daryl Williams, the owner of the dogs. Hagerman's mother, Salithia Maybell, and his neice, Zarquil Boston, both described previous attacks on animals and humans, one killing a dog. These updates are discussed at dogsbite.org

Chicago - The Cook County Medial Examiner's office concluded that Charles Hagerman, 44, was killed by one or both of his pit bulls in his Englewood home.

When his wife and her son returned to their home, Hagerman was dead and some reports indicate one dog was still mauling his body. The dogs had torn off all his clothes and torn off half of his face.

The dogs, 3 1/2 yo Scrappy and his offspring, Rocco, were reportedly well cared for and loved and there was no indication that the dogs were dangerous, though Scrappy was territorial.

A neighbor reported seeing the dogs being walked regularly. Daryl William, the son of Hagerman's wife, reported that the dogs slept in Hagerman's bedroom. The family, at a loss to explain why these dogs killed their owner, suspects that Hagerman may have had a seizure which scared the them.

Police had to shoot the dogs to remove them from the apartment.

May 15, 2012 Pit bull (that inflicted serious injury on owner) dies after being Tasered by police

Interesting note: I added the part of the headline in parentheses. We in human centric communities are used to seeing the serious injury sustained by a human emphasized over the death of the 2 time mauling pit bull that caused it even if the victim is also the idiot owner (the pit lived with the victim but was technically owned by the victim's son's girlfriend, HALEY ALEXIS PEKALA).

Roselle – Roselle police officers responded about 9 p.m. on May 8 to a home the 500 block of Rodenburg Road for report of a woman who had been bit by a dog, according to a release. Police knew of the dog from a previous bite report.

The American Staffordshire terrier had severely bitten a 55-year-old woman in the left leg inside the home, the release said. She was taken to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village where she underwent emergency surgery.

Apr 29, 2012 Recently Adopted Pit Bull Savagely Attacks Basset Hound

The unpredictable nature of predatory pit bull attacks cannot be "caught" by temperament testing which is known to be unreliably inadequate for all breeds. Unpredictability is one of the traits that make pit bulls uniquely dangerous. This is just the latest attack by a newly adopted pit bull in the last couple months.

The comments get whacky, but true to form, the other pit bull fanatics blame the fanatic owner and the fanatic owner blames the shelter. And, like all nutter reasoning, it is two fries short of a happy meal and no one states the obvious.

Elgin – Glen and Nancy Moss of Elgin bought Carson on April 1 and renamed him Smithers. Three days later, the dog mauled a neighbor’s basset hound before attacking Nancy’s leg as she tried to separate the dogs.

The basset hound required about $1,100 in veterinary costs; Nancy Moss was hospitalized for two days. Her husband said that because the dog twisted when he was biting down, it created tears that stitches could not fix.

Dec 07, 2011 Rockford woman dies after attack by her pit bull

Rockford - A woman died Tuesday after being mauled by one of her two pit bulls in November.

Tonia C. Parks, 39, was attacked by one of her two 8-year-old pit bulls as she had a seizure in her home Nov. 18 in the 3200 block of Collins Street, said Jennifer Stacy, deputy director of Winnebago County Animal Services. Reports say she suffered injuries to her head and that her jugular vein had been bitten. Had remained in critical condition until she passed away.

This fatal pit bull attack was not picked up by national news outlets. The initial local reports correctly identified the dogs as pit bulls though subsequent reports suggested the dogs were american bulldogs. AP Illinois' miniscule coverage mentioned no breed in a report a month after local Animal Services confirmed the dogs were pit bulls through a FOI request from the Rockford Register Star.

May 20, 2011 Monmouth American Bulldogs Mauled Woman

Monmouth - Warren County sheriff’s deputies were sent to a rural Monmouth home at 8:20 p.m. Thursday after a neighborhood report of someone calling for help.

The first deputy on the scene discovered a woman being mauled by two American bulldogs. The deputy destroyed both animals in order to save the woman, according to a news release from the Warren County Sheriff’s Department.

Oct 30, 2010 Woman Injured by Her Pit Bulls

Galesburg — Officers responded to 630 N. Cedar St. Friday in response to a woman who had been injured trying to separate her two fighting pit bulls. The pit bulls were turned over to be euthanized. The woman's injuries were serious and included a broken hand.

Dec 03, 2008 Man kills pit bull during mauling

JOLIET — A man wielding a knife killed a pit bull mix that was mauling its owner in the yard of a home in the 200 block of Criswell Street, police said.

Both men were taken to Silver Cross Hospital, where the dog owner was treated for "brutal" bites to his leg and face, and the rescuer for bites to his hands, officials said.

Mar 2, 2008 Pit bull attacks on the rise, Ledy VanKavage thwarts all attempts to protect people and pets

There have been numerous pit bulls attacks across Southern Illinois and many subsequent attempts by municipalities to strengthen laws governing vicious dogs.

Danny Tucker, animal control officer in Herrin, recently spoke out about an attack in that community in which two pit bulls killed a dog that was chained up in its owner's yard.

The most recent reported incident is a weekend attack in West Frankfort. Franklin County Animal Control Supervisor Jarrett Broy said a pit bull attacked its owner after having lived in the home for eight months and showing no previous signs of aggression.

Articles published in The Southern Illinoisan show Murphysboro officials attempting to have two pit bulls declared vicious in February after the dogs had been named in several incidents, including the death of another resident's dog.

In October 2007, the city council in Johnston City revised a vicious dog ordinance that made specific reference to pit bulls. The revision made the ordinance non-breed-specific.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals got involved in Cutler in February 2006, for an attempt in that community to create ordinances specifically naming pit bulls.

Officials against Cutler's attempt to single out the breed said the decision to name pit bulls and Rottweilers, specifically, stemmed from the nature of their breeds' reputation and not a specific incident.

In 2006, the vicious dog problem had gotten so bad in Illinois that Gov. Rod Blagojevich got involved with the signing of three bills aimed to curtail attacks.

The laws didn't name any specific breeds but did tighten the leash on owners.

Saline County felt the burden of the battle over vicious dogs and those who love them in July 2005, when a pit bull terrier named Frankie caught the public's attention.

Frankie was declared vicious after being accused of biting five Saline County residents, but his owner was given the option to keep the dog under strongly regulated guidelines. After conferences with public officials, the owner decided to have the dog euthanized.

The City of Zeigler chose to take the non-breed-specific approach to its vicious dog ordinances, in November 2004, but added language that better enabled the city to hold owners responsible for their dogs' actions.

The move to tighten the laws came after a pit bull and a mixed breed attacked several animals and were captured and destroyed.

Chicago - A 77-year-old Logan Square man found dead in his home with a puddle of blood at his feet apparently was killed by his own two bulldogs, the Cook County medical examiner ruled Tuesday.
Alexander Gillis was unresponsive when his son-in-law found him sitting in a kitchen chair about 10 p.m. Monday in the man's home in the 2600 block of West Logan Boulevard, according to a police spokeswoman.

When paramedics arrived a short time later, they noted that Gillis had multiple puncture wounds and lacerations to both of his calves, and tourniquets were tied around both of his ankles in an apparent effort to try to stop the bleeding.
It was unclear who tied the tourniquets, police said. Gillis' death, however, was caused by "multiple injuries from a dog attack," a Cook County spokeswoman said. The medical examiner's office has ruled the death accidental.
Police at the scene found Gillis' blood trailing through the house to the basement, where they found what police identified as two adult male English bulldogs.
But a spokeswoman for the city's Animal Care and Control unit said the dogs were either English or American bulldogs. They will remain at the city's pound until further notice from police, she said.
"Animal Control indicated that the dogs were very calm when they received them," police spokeswoman JoAnn Taylor said. Taylor said police are still investigating the matter, and it is unclear whether one or both dogs were involved in the killing and what--if anything--may have prompted the attack.
Priscilla Scienski, 79, Gillis' next-door neighbor, said Gillis loved the dogs and she would often see him playing with them.
"He said he bought the dogs for the kids, but I think he was the one who really cared for them," Scienski said.
