Feb 06, 2017 Aggressive Macomb Pit Bull Shot by Police Officer

Macomb - A city police officer was forced to fire his pistol at a dog late Sunday night after the
dog acted aggressively toward the officer and others, according to information from Macomb
police administration.

Macomb needs a Pit Bull Ban!

Macomb Deputy Chief Eric Lenardt stated that on Sunday night, police were called to the 400 block of North Campbell Street on a report of a dog at large that was nipping at people trying to help its owner get it into his residence. Lenardt said that the owner was reportedly intoxicated. On
arrival, an officer was able to help get the pitbull into the residence.

However, he instructed the owner not to open the door, otherwise the dog would get loose and continue to act aggressively. The owner opened the door, and the dog quickly went toward the officer. The officer stated in his report that he sprayed the dog with pepper spray three to four times, emptying the container. The dog continued to come toward the officer in an aggressive manner, so the officer fired his pistol at it. The officer believed he had missed the dog, as the animal ran toward the back of the house.

Once at the back porch, he saw the dog and realized he had struck it in the paw. An animal control
officer was called to the scene, secured the dog and took it to a veterinarian for treatment.
The dog's owner, identified as Christopher J. Martin, 43, of Macomb, was arrested on a charge of
resisting/obstructing an officer for opening the door and letting the dog escape when he had been
instructed not to. Martin was also cited for having a dog running at large.

Macomb - The city has had 5 dog attacks on people and dogs in the last 6 months including a fatal mauling of a dog by a pit bull that broke through a fence for the express purpose of killing little yorkie being walked on a leash in front of his terrified and traumatized owner.

The mayor has said he wants to prevent the kind of fatal mauling attack that happened to Ryan Maxwell. Though, the proposed ordinance has some good elements, it will do nothing to prevent a first attack:

Increased fines for owners of dogs who repeatedly violate city ordinances.

Muzzling and maybe euthanizing a dog that's been deemed dangerous.

And a creation of a vicious dog registry.

Apr 14, 2013 Victims of pit bull ask for tougher rules on vicious dogs

Macomb - An incredible story of animal control incompetence began when a pit bull bit another dog and was surrendered to a shelter.  The dog was adopted out and then got loose and killed a leashed little dog in February 2012, but was allowed to stay with the owner who let it escape again in September 2012 when it attacked two people in their own yard.  The pit bit a man on both his knees and bit the hand of a woman.

The pit bull was surrendered, deemed unadoptable, and banned from the county.  It was taken to a shelter in neighboring Fort Madison, IA where it is reportedly was up for adoption again.

Victims of this pit bull want stronger measures for vicious dogs in McDonough county, increased fines for people who let their dogs run at large, and "greater scrutiny of certain breeds."

In response, animal control wants to do 15 minute temperament tests in the ridiculous belief that a 15 minute test can reliably ascertain if a dog will later show aggression.

Even if the dog fails the aggression test, they want to be able to "relocate" it - so people and pets in other communities can be maimed or killed.

Apr 13, 2009 Macomb Vicious Pit bull Runs Loose

Macomb, Ill. — The following reports are based on police records.

Victor J. Warner, 28, of 817 E. Murray St., was cited about 9:50 p.m. Saturday for letting a vicious animal run at-large. He is accused of letting a pit bull that was charging people run loose.
