Dec 20, 2016 Urbana Pit Bull Attacked a Man in his own Home
Urbana - While pit bull owner ANGELA NELSON was out of the house, her room mate was attacked by her pit bull when her room mate, a 67-year-old man, reprimanded the pit bull for urinating in the house. The man received serious injuries to the face, was taken to the hospital. The victim was in surgery for 4 hours and received 300 stitches to his face.
The director of the Champaign County animal control department, Stephanie Joos, said that the pit bull had “very serious behavioral issues” and would be put down.
Feb 04, 2016 Sidney Pit Bulls Maul a Sheltie Unprovoked
Sidney - A Sheltie named Buddy was walking on his leash with his owner when he was attacked by two pit bull that escaped from their yard.
In classic pit bull style, one pit bull took each end of the helpless little dog and mauled him. After he got away and began running home, one of the pit bulls kept biting at him. And another classic outcome of a pit bull attack is that the victims are left traumatized and upset long after the attack was over.
Despite the deep wounds, the pit bull owner somehow still denies this was an attack.
The sheltie owner wants dangerous dogs banned from the city.
The pro-pit local news outlet refused to mention that the dogs were pit bulls but there was enough stereotypic pit bull defense language to make it clear these were pit bulls.
The victim’s owner said, "What I want is our board to prohibit dangerous dogs. I'm not picking on a breed, but we don't need it here."
And the pit bulls’ owner said that she “doesn't want them (her dogs) to be viewed in a negative light.”
The pit bull owner’s pit bulls were declared dangerous.

Apr 21, 2015 Illinois Times Reported on a Great Dane Inflicting a Serious Mauling on a Child
Read how the Illinois Times reports extensively on a very serious Great Dane attack, but somehow missed all the local pit bull attacks in the previous seven years - some which were just as severe as the Great Dane attack.
UPDATE Jan 07, 2015 Champaign Pit Bull Previously Declared Dangerous Bites Deputy
UPDATE - The pit bull will be put down and the owner is very upset about it. No word on the owner's emotional state after knowing her dog had mauled someone.
UPDATE - The Champaign County Sheriff attacked by a pit bull will be out of work for 4 weeks at least. The size of the wound was described as being big enough to fit four fingers inside and affected deep muscles. The sheriff says this is something he never wants to go through again.
Champaign - A pit bull that had previously been declared dangerous for biting a mail carrier has bitten a Champaign County Sheriff's Deputy. The pit bull has been impounded.
After the deputy knocked on the front door to deliver a subpoena, the pit bull barreled out of a side door and attacked the deputy leaving a severe wound. The owner did not help the deputy who drove himself to the emergency room in the zero degree weather.
Marlo Britton was prosecuted in 2013 after the same male pit bull — its name is Boosi — attacked a mail carrier on Dec. 13, 2012, at a home in the 1400 block of Hedge Road.
Animal Control Director Stephanie Joos assures the public that even though Animal Control has had to pick the pit bull up several times since 2008, Boosi the pit bull has only sent two government employees to the hospital in the course of doing their jobs and that the owner can get Boosi back for $350 and kenneling costs.

Aug 08, 2014 Rantoul Pit Bull-Mastiff Mix Attacks A Doberman Unprovoked - Must Leave Town
Rantoul - A pit bull-mastiff mix escaped from its home, ran down the street approached a doberman seemingly wanting to play, and then launched an unprovoked, vicious, off-property attack.
The irresponsible pit bull owner wants to keep the mauler in the neighborhood. And the mauler owner's attorney wants people to believe that yelling, "Come get your dog!" provoked the pit bull to attack which would excuse the mauler from being deemed vicious.
Finally an agreement was made in which the owner would take her dog some place else to live - out of Rantoul, endangering pets in another community.

Feb 03, 2013 Threat of lawsuits prompts Champaign police to stand idle when pit bulls maul dogs
Champaign - An ill-prepared individual police officer using poor judgment fired seven shots at a pit bull attacking a dog, killing the dog. One round ricocheted into an apartment building. The officer was suspended for one day without pay.
Using this incident, Ledy Vankavage has swooped into Champaign and threatened that police officers and their employers will be sued if they attempt to shoot menacing dogs. Why is Vankavage so interested in admonishing police to not shoot aggressive dogs that are mauling our pets? Because they're usually pit bulls doing the mauling and normal dogs getting mauled to death.

From 2008 to 2012 Elgin police were forced to shoot 23 dogs and 20 of those were pit bulls. In the same time span, Aurora police were forced to shoot 8 dogs and 5 or 6 of those were pit bulls.
By way of example, she shares a completely irrelevant lawsuit with police officers to scare them. She cites a famous suit following a police raid on Hell's Angels' homes in which they shot and killed three dogs. The Hells Angels won a settlement from the city. The issue in that lawsuit was that police knew the dogs were present when they were planning the raid and made no plan to safely isolate the dogs. That has nothing to do with encountering a dog with no warning while conducting police business or with trying to save a dog being attacked by a pit bull.
The Champaign police chief has vowed to implement new policy that will force police officers to stand idly by and allow a pit bull to turn a small friendly dog into a a puddle of blood and guts.
Police would have been forced to stand idly by if non lethal measures were ineffective while these innocent pets were attacked by pit bulls under Champaign's new policy:
Nov 01, 2012 Off duty cop kills attacking pit bull
Feb 21, 2012 Elgin police kill pit bull after it attacked dog
Sep 13, 2010 Dog Attack Prompts QPD to Shoot and Kill Pit Bull

Nov 16, 2012 Dog attacked by pit bull then fatally shot by police
Champaign - While attempting to save a labrador that was being attacked by a pit bull, police accidentally shot the labrador.
The victim dog was an exceedingly well-trained, gentle labrador retriever that was a beloved and cherished pet. The owner's daughter had to witness a protracted attack by an aggressive pit bull and then see her dog shot dead.
The young woman was walking her dog on a leash when a pit bull ran up to them for the express purpose of attacking her dog. The woman and another person tried to kick the pit bull off the lab, but when police arrived, the pit bull was still attacking the lab.
In an attempt to kill the pit bull and save the labrador, a police officer accidentally fatally shot the labrador.
The story on Illinois homepage.net headlines this as a dog fight when it is revealed that the victim dog was an exceedingly well-trained, gentle dog. This was NOT a dog fight. This was an attack by a fighting breed dog on a beloved, cherished and well-trained pet in a supposedly civilized society.

----------
Urbana - Mrs. Fredrika Hank, aged mother of Mrs. Carrie Busch, 411 West Main street, was attacked by a savage bulldog on West Springfield avenue about 5 o'clock Wednesday evening, but fortunately escaped with slight injury. The animal which belongs to a painter at work on the residence occupied by J.C. Duncan, 709 West Springfield avenue, was lying on the walk in front of the Duncan home when Mrs. Hank passed. The dog spran at her, its teeth tearing through her heavy skirts and lacerating one of her limbs. The owner interfered in time to prevent the beast from pulling her down.

Jan 25, 1906 Pit bulls banned from University of Illinois in Champaign, IL
"Safety before Bull dogs"
Have you seen the vintage pit bull photos that are supposed to prove that pit bulls were considered great pets a long time ago? Among them, you find many photos of pit bulls and related breeds as mascots for fraternities.*
This is obviously a fine idea since college students in general and frat boys especially have always been regarded as paragons of restraint, responsibility and wise judgment.
In 1905, an enterprising Champaign Illinois breeder recognized the frat boys' need for bull dog gaiety and marketed his bull dogs to University of Illinois college students.
Alas, just one year later the U of I administrators put the kibosh on pit bulls' contribution to the gaiety of college life by instituting a ban on pit bulldogs. Need we even ask why? As surely as night follows day, after bull dogs became popular with U of I college students, the university experienced a series of maulings on campus.
January 25, 1906:
And in an article the next day:
And the day after that, in another article, the resolution was printed which said in part:
*Please note that the same pit bull advocates who claim no one can identify a pit bull, have no problem identifying pit bulls in photos that are sometimes 100 years old.

As surely as night follows day, after bull dogs became popular with U of I college students, the university experienced a series of maulings on campus.
January 25, 1906:
The University Council Tuesday evening practically eliminate bull dogs as a feature of student life when it formulated a rule forbidding the presence of these dogs at any time on the campus. It was also decided to ask students not to keep these dogs and arrangements were made to petition the city councils of Urbana and Champaign to exclude the animals from the two cities.
****
The action of the council came as the result of several recent exhibitions of viciousness on the part of the bull dogs. Mrs. Laura Riley, a colored domestic at the Delta Upsilon house, is still in the hospital as the result of an attack by one of these dogs. Dr. C.G. Hopkins was the victim of an attack by one of these pets, while another was detected in the act of killing a pig on the University farm.
![]() |
| Dr. C.G. Hopkins, one of the bull dog victims, established an experimental crop program at U of I in the 1890s that still exists today |
The accidents which have occurred within a very short time have tended to show the danger of having such dogs around, hence the action of the council. There is no doubt but what these dogs are more vicious than any other species, and the council has probably worked in the interests of the people at large by putting on the ban although it may work hardship upon some who own these dogs as pets and have become attached to them. We are all interested in the welfare of all members of the University community and are willing to do all in our power to make things as safe as possible. If bull dogs are unsafe and vicious, as they seem to have proven themselves within the last few weeks, let us get rid of them. Let us get some other kind of dog. Safety before bull dogs.
And the day after that, in another article, the resolution was printed which said in part:
The bull dog is essentially a dangerous animal, and when kept under present conditions it constitutes a perpetual menace to human life. Enough accidents have already happened to admonish all thinking men that women and children are entirely unsafe under present conditions.Days after the resolution was enacted, two fraternity mascot pit bulldogs were shot by unknown people. Bruiser, a pit bulldog, described as being "popular and well known" and owned by a football and baseball star and son of a prominent Rockford family, Jack Crill, was one of those dogs. The frat boys suspect campus police of the shootings. A month later, Crill's home town of Rockford enacts a ban on dogfighting and all animal fighting and baiting.
*Please note that the same pit bull advocates who claim no one can identify a pit bull, have no problem identifying pit bulls in photos that are sometimes 100 years old.

Nov 10, 1905 Urbana: Loose Bull Dogs Fight Each Other on Downtown Street
-----------
Here is a Job For the Urbana Police
----------
Urbana - The wrong of letting bulldogs run upon downtown streets unless they are properly chained was again exemplified Friday morning by a repulsive fight between two great dogs of the bull variety, corner Main and Market streets. The vicious animals both had a death grip on each other and it was a difficult task to separate them. This was not a nice exhibition by any means on the downtown corner.
If we are not mistaken there is a city ordinance making the owner of a vicious dog responsible for allowing the animal to run unchained upon the streets, where it may attack smaller and less harmless (sic) dogs, and perhaps kill them. Bulldogs have no business running loose in the business portion and it is the duty of the police to see that whatever law exists regarding this matter is rigidly enforced. That bulldog fight should awaken the officers to the fact that their vigilance is needed in this line.
