Nov. 21, 2017 Wheaton Pit Bull Killed Puppy In Front of Children

Wheaton - A brand new puppy named Theo was killed by a pit bull that dashed out of its yard to attack. Theo was being walked on a leash by a mother and two girls aged 7 and 9 who saw their puppy mauled to death.

Neighbors say that the pit bull has attacked before. The poor mother and former owner of Theo believes that DuPage animal control will work with her to get rid of the dangerous pit bull. They won't help her. They actively promote pit bulls and they are probably a big reason a pit bull was in the community in the first place.

Wheaton was listed among the "top 25 highest earning towns" on CNNMoney in 2010. Today it has a median family income of $107,763. There are likely no backyard breeders or dogfighters in Wheaton. The pit bulls are likely coming from rescues and shelters that may even import fighting dogs from outside the county and sell them as great family pets to Wheaton residents.

As the pit bull population rises, so will the number of serious attacks in even well-heeled areas of DuPage County.

Woodridge - A woman was hospitalized after she was attacked by a pit bull at an apartment complex. The woman was attacked while walking through the complex. When she walked by a unit, a pit bull pushed out of a screen door and attacked her.

The Woman sustained multiple injuries and was taken to Good Samaratin Hospital.

Apparently, Joliet is attempting to name and shame irresponsible pit bull owners in a vain attempt to curb their massive pit bull attack problem instead of doing the right thing, which is to ban pit bulls in Joliet.

Joliet - A father was luck to be able to protect his children from a loose, aggressive pit bull. The pit bull owner’s was identified and his name and photo were published online in an apparent attempt to deter the massive number of Joliet residents with pit bulls from letting their pit bulls attack innocents. So far, it is not working. Joliet needs a ban and it needs a ban more than most places.

Jul 27, 2017 Lee County Pit Bulls Repeatedly Attack Dogs, Nothing Done

Lee County - "Been having problems with the neighbors pits - we live in the country - Lee County Illinois - twice my dog has been attacked by those damn pits and the second time required multiple stitches and drains. My dog weighs 95 lbs!

Animal control has told the neighbor several times to control his dogs and he won't. Lee County states attorney told us that we need to hire a lawyer to handle the neighbor!

Seriously!!! He and his dogs are the problem here and WE nee to spend money on an attorney to try and get protection!

The sheriff says call animal control - animal control says there is't anything on the books in Illinois that helps us with this situation - and - there aren't ANY ordinances regarding dogs in this county!!

What a joke! So we have to live in fear of his wandering pits and no one will help us!"

May 26, 2017 Lawsuit: East Alton Pit Bull Attacks Lab & Owner

East Alton - A woman was walking her labrador retriever on a leash in her own front yard when a loose pit bull owned by RAYE C. MOORE attacked them both causing severe physical injuries.

"The plaintiff alleges McLaughlin failed to properly supervise her pet when outside and exposed to other animals, failed to properly train her dog to avoid harming other animals or individuals and failed to warn others about the dangers of owning a pit bull.

Chicago Pit Bull Attacked Near the Corner of Berteau and Clark

Chicago - At the corner of Berteau and Clark yet another unreported pit bull attack. In this neighborhood with two three-legged pit bulls, the owner must be a self-congratulatory, full-of-herself, idiotic rescue angel who ran away from this owner. She's probably got a blog about her two Tripod Pitties in the City, too.

"A warning to all dog walkers/pet owners: Today I was attacked by a pit bull.

There were two 3 legged pit bulls walking on the opposite of Grace from me as I walked my dog. The two dogs started freaking out as we walked past, on the opposite side of the street, one of the dogs broke free from its owner and I watched as it came bolting across grace toward my dog.
The owner was shouting at me to "quick get my dog" and I remember thinking "Lady I have my dog right here, your dog is loose?!" but I didn't get a chance to say anything.

I have never had an encounter with a vicious dog before. This dog jumped at my dog in a way that I can only describe as dog fighting. I instinctively lifted me leg toward the dog to get it away from mine, and it circled back around and went for my dog again. I put my arm in the way and was bit in the wrist and subsequently my knee as I tired to get the dog off my arm with my other leg. It seemed like it took forever, as I realized this dog was really biting me, finally the owner grabbed her dog and wrapped herself around the dog in a protective manner or in some attempt to prevent the dog from seeing anything. I remember my blood pumping really good and calling the dog a psycho and telling her the dog was a danger. I should have called the cops but my injuries were minor and my dog was unhurt. I just wanted to get away from the situation. If the owner was not around, nothing short of incapacitating the dog would have stopped its attack. Please be careful or if you know these dogs owners please advise them to muzzle, properly leash, and attempt to rehabilitate their animal who obviously was involved in dog fighting. The more I think about it the more unsettled I am by the whole event."

Elmwood Park - "Today I was attacked by a pit bull on 74th ave." The woman says that she jumped into bushes to avoid being bitten by a loose pit bull.

Jan 29, 2017 Hainesville Pit Bull Attacked Husky

UPDATE: The Husky has died from a broken neck. Notice that the description of the attack and of the injuries to the husky were both minimized in the original reporting. The pit bull still has not been found.

Round Lake Park - A 68 year old woman was injured when she tried to stop a loose pit bull from attacking her Siberian husky on the 300 block of Grandview Drive in Round Lake Park. An unidentified woman came and took the pit bulls away without identifying herself or offering to pay for the medical damage to the husky.

The husky’s owner was taken to the hospital by ambulance, treated and released and the husky was taken for veterinary care for injuries to its ear “and elsewhere”. Her hands were severely injured. Police are asking for help to find the black pit bull and the owner whom they believe lives in Hainesville. The husky owner wants the pit bull found because it is “obviously dangerous.” Police say if the owner is found there will be charges.

Aug 12, 2016 Yorkville Woman Ticketed in Dog Bite Incident

Yorkville - A woman was issued a city ordinance violation citation because of a dog bite following an investigation by Yorkville Police.

The dog bite occurred Sunday morning around 9:00.

Officers issued that ticket to 44-year-old Michele Schuster of Titus Drive in Yorkville.

The victim who was bitten told police that he was running in the 2000 block of Titus Drive when the dog ran up to him and allegedly bit the man on his right calf, puncturing the skin.

The exact breed of the dog was not released by police.

But here is a photo of the dog that looks like a pit bull/lab mix

The victim was treated at a nearby hospital and did not require any stitches.

Mt. Vernon - After retiring, I bought a house in Mt. Vernon. My parents moved us to Texas when I was nine. I am enjoying the open friendliness of the people here.

On Friday, June 17, I was running with my dog near my house, when a pit bull, seemingly out of nowhere, attacked my dog. Fiona was severely injured and I was bitten trying to stop the attack. As I lay in the road holding my dog to protect it from the pit bull, two cars stopped to help. One of the drivers, Tonya, called her veterinarian and drove us to the clinic. On the way, 911 dispatch called and asked where we were. She had sent EMS, fire and police to the site. I didn’t know this and told the dispatcher that I left the scene to save my dog’s life, and that my injuries could wait for now.

While Dr. Lamczyk worked to save her, police and animal control arrived to document the attack and for me to identify the pit bull. The police officer and the animal control officer were concerned, professional and their actions helped to relieve some of the stress of the ordeal. Tonya stayed and later drove me home. The clinic staff were amazing. Fiona survived and is home.

I want to thank the Mt. Vernon Police Department, emergency services and dispatch, animal control, the concerned citizens who stopped and everyone at Lamczyk Veterinary Clinic. You made a bad situation bearable.

Batavia - A black and white pit bull was loose and when a police officer attempted to leash it, it began repeatedly aggressively charging at the officer. When the officer approached, the pit bull became aggressive and charged the officer several times before knocking the officer down. The officer shot the aggressive pit bull in the side in self defense.

The pit bull ran away and attacked a leashed labrador it encountered. The pit bull is expected to survive. The owner, JENNIFER ATKINSON, was located and ticketed. The same pit bull had bitten a person in April 2015.

Jun 07, 2016 Lake Zurich Pit Bulls Attacked a Young Shepherd Mix Unprovoked

Lake Zurich - Alice was “ripped up” on both hind legs and her stomach when two pit bulls escaped their yard and attacker her. Alice’s owner was bitten several times when he tried to separate the animals.

Several Lake Zurich residents attended the village board meeting to voice their concerns, including Alice’s owner. The group, including a local business owner asked the village board to adopt dangerous and vicious animal ordinances that would address attack’s like Alice’s. The village board said that the Lake County Animal Control is sufficient. An investigation is under way. This attack was not reported in the news when it occurred.

Jun 06, 2016 Burr Ridge Pit Bull Bit a Man in the thigh

Burr Ridge - A man reported a black-and-white dog, that looks like a pit bull and terrier mix, bit him in the right thigh when he was walking near Steven's Park at about 8 p.m. May 26. The dog was on leash with its owner. The victim did not want to file a complaint against the dog owner.

Chicago - This attack was not reported in the media. It was found on Everyblock. The comments respond with several more pit bull attacks or encounters with aggressive loose pit bulls.

"On Spaulding between Palmer and Dickens: was walking my dog, when a loose pit bull spotted us across the street and ran quickly over and began biting and growling at my dog. I pulled my little guy back, and I guess yelled something in panic at the other dog and then he spurted back to the other side of the street. Some random lady was blazing it up (this was at 930-10am) a few yards from the dog and I asked her if it was hers, and she just stared at me and kept puffing away. I think I've seen her before, and someone who saw the incident said they had seen the dog before. I love all dogs, and have no issues with so-called aggressive breeds, but this one in particular was fast as hell and aggressive.

Posting because I'm not sure if anyone knows the owner (I think it was that woman), or if they've spotted this dog as well. However I just wanted to warn neighbors to maybe keep their pups close and be aware.

Called animal control once I got my dog back into the apartment but exactly two minutes later- the woman and the dog were gone."

May 08, 2016 Chicago Pit Bull Attack Severely Wounds Another Dog

Chicago - A woman reports on EveryBlock that her dog was severely attacked. The pit bull had severely attacke several times before and neither the police nor animal control did anything at all despite reports being made. Finally, with much persistence, the pit bull owner relinquished one of his pit bulls so it could be euthanized.

“My dog was attacked by a black and white pit bull at the corner of Mozart and Logan Blvd on Thursday May 5. Please be careful of this dog as it has attacked several other dogs in the neighborhood and is out loose tonight and dangerous. My dog has been in the ER and severely wounded. This situation is extremely serious. Community members have consistently reported the dog to the police. Please help to do the same and protect your animals.

There is an owner but there seems to be a lot of neglect and abuse. Hence why the dog has repeatedly attacked and viciously. The police are aware of the abuse as well. Likely the dog is trained to be a fighting dog.

So many police reports have been filed against the dog. There are 5 severe attacks that we know of that have been documented. The police are well aware. Animal control is also well aware but constantly refers us back to the police who essentially seem powerless. Our best option is to fight back as a community. Please help us by calling the alderman and asking them to look into this. The dog is still out in the neighborhood and it's just a matter of time before another animal or human attack occurs. I agree also about the vet bills. People have tried to sue the owner of the dog in the past but the court could not find him because he had just gotten out of jail. Please call your local officials to help us. Thank you.

Amber, we have all called 911 multiple times. In fact when it happened the cops were there. But it seems like they are not acing upon it when people who lives in the neighborhood feel extremely unsafe. If you want to help please call the local alderman and complain.

Thanks Amber. Unfortunately when you use that resource page you just posted and call 311 for animal control they tell you to call the police and file a police report. There is no way to talk with animal control directly. If you know of another way please do share. Sadly the system seems to be broken.

Hello again, first I have to say that even though this incredibly traumatic and devastating situation occurred and has to other dog owners in the past as well, the response from the community is to powerful and heart warming. I am grateful for the help from everyone. I got a call tonight from Animal Control that the owner relinquished one of the pit bulls (the black and white one) to be euthanized. While I feel a little safer I don't feel a sense of justice.”

Chicago - While a growing number of news outlets around the country are starting to take the issue of pit bull attacks seriously, the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Suntimes reporting is stuck in the “pit bulls before people” style. The headlines in the two major local news outlets mentioned that pit bulls were shot by police without giving one hint about the people the pit bulls were menacing or attacking as if it were more important to know that pit bulls were shot than to know that pit bulls attacked and hurt people.

Fox 32 actually reported some facts, went to the scene and interviewed neighbors most of whom were glad the police got rid of the pit bulls. The police were called because a woman walking her poodle were attacked, and she ran into a store for safety.

We know that one pit bull was shot at the scene, the other ran away and then was found and shot dead. We know no one was hurt. We know that the pit bulls’ owner has not been found. We don’t know if the surviving pit bull will be put down. Most importantly, we don’t know how many pit bulls are shot by police in Chicago in a year. We don’t know that other pit bulls weren’t shot by police on the very same day. And we don’t know why this shooting ended up in the news and another one didn’t.

The pit bull had a history of getting loose, being aggressive and biting.

The pit bull owner previously had been cited for dog running at large and for no rabies tag.

Paris - A pit bull that was chained in the front yard of its house snapped its chain and attacked a girl on her way to school. Zach Adams saw the girl was being attacked and saved the girl from the pit bull. Adams was bitten as well. The pit bull was owned by KATY D. CRAIG.

Both Adams and the girl went to the hospital to have their wounds attended.

Police chief Mike Henness said, “Unfortunately, we get this (kind of) call more often than we should. … Dog owners, for the most part, believe their dogs aren’t vicious.” He also said that people should not chain their dogs in the front yard and that if people see dogs chained in the front yard or any other dangerous dog activity to call the police.

The head of the local animal shelter provided useless advice to deal with a pit bull attack. The only safe way to deal with a pit bull attack is to make sure they never happen.
