May 26, 2017 Lawsuit: East Alton Pit Bull Attacks Lab & Owner

East Alton - A woman was walking her labrador retriever on a leash in her own front yard when a loose pit bull owned by RAYE C. MOORE attacked them both causing severe physical injuries.

From the article:
"The plaintiff alleges McLaughlin failed to properly supervise her pet when outside and exposed to other animals, failed to properly train her dog to avoid harming other animals or individuals and failed to warn others about the dangers of owning a pit bull.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks judgment in an amount greater than $50,000, plus costs of suit and any other further relief as the court deems just and proper. "

Chicago - This is another attack that went unreported. A graduate student says she wiped out her savings covering the costs of her beloved service dog's surgeries and medical care after a pit bull attacked Sassy.

Chicago Doesn't Need Pit Bulls

"I am a graduate student in public health and work part-time as a health writer. My service dog, Sassy, is the cutest thing on Earth and loves food, giving kisses, and going to the beach with me. I earn exactly enough to pay for my basic expenses, but am currently living paycheck to paycheck. I had started a growing savings account, but currently wiped it all out. It started when Sassy was attacked by a pit bull and needed expensive emergency surgery. When I recovered from that financially, I discovered a few lumps on her abdomen which turned out to be aggressive tumors. Because of this I need Modest Needs' and your help to pay for my rent payment, which is late as of now. This funding will bring a great sense of relief to me, as well as making my rent payment stable so that I do not have to worry about my most basic need- housing. I plan on finding full-time employment very soon so that I can prepare for future emergency expenses."

McHenry - Adria Hanus is legally blind and took a walk with her guide dog named Cassie on March 29 when Cassie was attacked by a pit bull that SLIPPED OUT OF A PRONG COLLAR.

The pit bull latched onto Cassie’s neck and would not let go until the pit bull’s owner, TERRY BROCK, got the pit off Cassie.

The pit bull owner said the pit bull just wanted to play. (It did: it wanted to play kill the dog) Also, BROCK believes Cassie is at fault for growling at the pit bull flying at her. That is to say, the pit bull owner is blaming Cassie for using instinctive, normal canine warning communication that is intended to avoid conflict.

Hanus has stopped taking walks out of fear and anxiety and does not know if Cassie will be able to go back to work as a guide dog again.

Meanwhile, the pit bull owners TERRY and MICHELLE BROCK are mouthing platitudes and making excuses and not acknowledging at all that they have cost a woman with a disability her freedom, sense of safety and security or that Cassie is not just a pet. If Cassie is unable to work, I hope they’ll fork over the $20,000 it costs to replace her.

Galesburg – Art Cartee and Bernie went on their version of a walk Tuesday morning — the 60-year-old man riding in his scooter and the black Lab work dog leashed to the scooter’s handle.

It was close to 10 a.m. Minutes later they were rushed by a brindle pit bull that crawled from under the back fence of a home on Cottage Avenue — just one block east of South Chambers Street.

“The dog came at us and went right for Bernie’s legs,” Cartee said. “I didn’t know what to do — punch the pit bull or what. I finally got Bernie away from the other dog and got him home.”

Unfortunately, Cartee and Bernie are no strangers to dog attacks. Including Tuesday’s incident, the pair have been attacked three times in the last 18 months.

“I’m tired of this,” Cartee said. “Audra, my wife, and I live in fear of the neighbors’ dogs. There is no reason for this.
